Galen Rupp's yearly salary

anything under a million is not that much for a major international company. their stuff is marked up so much its not a big deal. gross profit of say $50 per pair of shoes requires a max of 20,000 customers worldwide to be influenced by him. these people are likely to get more than one pair of shoes. its been analyzed by people that have a lot more info than anyone here and they must feel hes worth it

I hope it did not come off like I was hating on him. I personally like him but I was just wondering what value the company thinks it is getting if they are in fact paying him $1 million a year or close to it. I don't really check to see what he's wearing and even if I noticed the Nike logo or vest he was wearing I'm unlikely to make a purchasing decision based on that. Obviously other people must be doing so or the company would not estimate that the value of him to the company is worth close to $1 million dollars. Good for Galen if that is the way it works!

depressing for all but the top 0.01% of runners. Trying to make it as a professional runner is a fool's gamble.

Thats why you're better off at least finishing a degree instead of just trying to turn pro before doing it.

Soon, the paychecks will dry up for Webb too. And, he doesn't have a degree to fall back on. Despite this, he could probably make it on as a coach at South Lakes one day.

Coaching or personal trainng (basically coaching too) is the way to go.

Nike's value for Rupp is irrational but understandable. He went to Oregon. He is "the second coming of Pre." Phil Knight loves him--was there for Stanford for the record attempt. Nike wants Rupp to be wearing their stuff when he does whatever he might do regardless of whether or not Rupp will make that up in return. Phil Knight would lose it if a guy from Oregon medaled in the Olympics wearing Asics...

I've heard that Andy Wheating signed around a 900K contract with nike so Galen must be around there.

This guy is right. Nike spikes are very popular but almost no one wears their trainers.

Much of Nike's benefit comes from breadth, not a single athlete. They're relying more on, when someone watches the 1500m final in the oly games, every single athlete is racing in Nike spikes. That sort of blanketing is worth way more than any individual athlete, besides people they market heavily (K. Goucher and Webb).

If you're trying to decide the merits of an individual, that's more the realm of Adidas. They don't try to compete with Nike in terms of breadth, but they grab the top few (Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix, Bekele, Geb...) and try to rely on their star power.
