Well 250k in 1982 is worth about 600k in 2012.

The dude plays video games 4+ hours a day when he's not training. What is he going to be after he's a professional runner, a professional video game player? You don't waste time like this unless you don't have to worry about money.
pretty sure he could get some sort of job with nike when he is done.

He makes far more than he deserves. I can't imagine him being sponsored by nike does anything at all to boost their revenues. Sponsors paying him is essentially charity and sunk costs
Again I find these endorsement deals puzzling. He is not a household name. Believe it or not outside of distance running circles few people know who the heck he is. Further perhaps because I'm in the demographic that is not influenced by trends I can't imagine going out and buying a pair of Nike shows because I see Rupp wearing one. When I do buy shoes it is because I need them and I tend to base my decision on the look, comfort, feel and price. Not sure how that fits in with Nike's marketing strategy.
You guys are tools.
Galen Rupp is inspiring a generation of distance runners. Just spend some time at a high school meet anywhere in this country and he is the one name that comes up over and over again when doing focus groups.
You need a reality check. Rupp's salary is frankly none of the business of posters here. But high school runners care about THEIR teammates and THEIR rivalries. Most pay precious little attention to elites. Many will be much more likely to know the name Sarah Baxter than Galen Rupp.
Sarah who?

And this does what exactly for Nike?

He doesn't have a salary, as he is self-employed.
I remember the figure 700k being thrown around when he first went pro
That, and he's not very marketable. Yes, he is America's best long distance athlete right now (I consider Lagat mid-d) but no offense, he's just a skinny guy who looks like he's still 16. Solinsky is much more marketable; he looks like he'd be kicking ass in his spare time, not playing video games and playing Peter Pan in the local plays (haha I kid, I have nothing against Galen, just to emphasize my point). I know Solinsky isn't a "household name" either, but really, how many current elite Nike sponsored athletes are actually household names? Tbh, the only pro athletes right known by those who don't pay attention to track at all are probably Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay. I may have missed someone, but my point stands.
I'm just glad there's a runner making that much money.. which is still paltry relative to other sports salaries.
WOW ...I hope is true. Galen deserves all the money.pro ball/football/hokey/basketball making millions. I hope he will make millions some day.

How much have you made so far in your pro career?
I hope Nike is paying him around 1 million per year. In any case that is pocket change considering what Nike pays out to the goons in the NBA and NFL.
Come one guys , he deserves every dollar, fastest white athlete in 10 EVER, and if he finally runs to finish in some time trial race he will be fastest white in 5k also and when he moves up to Marathon he will go from being top20 in the world to being top5 - top10 , he progresses EVERY season, trains hard and smart that's why he doesn't get hurt or burn out, he will be on running stage for a looong time!!!
Whatever it is we all know that Mo deserves more than him but he is probably not getting it.

I don't know what's puzzling about it.
It doesn't matter if he's a household name.
The white guy on TV running with/beating Kenyans in Nike gear is worth some $$.
Yes, people are influenced by this. That's why companies do it.
Really not that hard to understand.
