Week 85
*************************
Greetings, semi-centenarians+. In terms of work and family (among other things), it’s been a hellacious week; I’ll just leave it at that. I had written down some comments in response to some of your all’s posts, but got side-tracked before I could post them, so I apologize for my inattention to the thread.
So let me catch up with a few of you all:
Ken, I promise to look through those articles…there’s a lot to digest here. And I offer my prayers for a good outcome from your tests last week.
AlanB, tough luck on those stitches. Glad you can keep going! Hope the ortho appointment was mundane.
Edgewood, thanks for the remarks on sitting and atrophy. I was sitting in my office computer thinking, "Man, this chair really does suck!" I’ve got to change something.
Over50, glad to provide a push! So far, I can say that reporting on it has given me the right frame of mind to push myself into doing strength/balance routines consistently. Still not a fan.
Old Guy II, you seem to be pretty steady now at 50+ miles. Glad to hear about your other stuff. Anybody else use a rowing machine?
Charlie, I know you're joking, but I understand where you are coming from about how being overly cautious won't get you anywhere....but I still think it's a good mantra. Among this crowd, I suspect it just helps to remember to throttle back a bit and not to step so close to the edge all the time. I also suspect many of us came from the old school thinking that if you're not just a step away from injury, you're not training hard enough. I don’t think that's the right trajectory for us old farts. I'm open to alternative opinions, however.
Also, I saw this blip on the message boards.

Anyone have a comment for this guy?
Great to see AK-54 and racerdb check in! Glad to hear that you are both getting in some good training (even if it seems lightweight for you, Dave, it’s still pretty good).

OK, on to my week. I’m still in my one-step-back mode as far as running is concerned. Managed a little over 30 miles on six (sort of) days of running. Here’s the week’s log:
Sun: 0 too busy, but did do the balance routine in the evening
Mon: 4.0 w/2.1@6:20 avg. pace +post-run+static+tube+balance
Tues: 3.7 + 6x9 stories stairs+balance
Wed: 5.7 w/1.1@6:10 avg. pace +post-run+upper+squats
Thur: 2.6 +balance, too busy again!
Fri: 6.6 w/2.1@6:00 avg. pace +post-run+tube+dynamic
Sat: 8.0 easy to moderate (avg: 7:32 pace, 151bpm)+static+balance
Moved my wife to Louisville on Sunday in the pouring rain (2.7” fell); she’ll be there for the year retooling herself after 30 years as a child educator into a health-care technical program. We’ll still see each other most weekends, but it’ll be different, that’s for sure. Thursday was also pretty worthless as I had to prepare for four committee meetings, three of which I had to chair. On a related note, I’ve taken over duties as president of our local running club, so I’ve been really thinking about how to improve our club as a conduit for promoting a more healthy lifestyle (along the lines of what we discussed a few week’s back.)
Much less soreness this week, so I think that I can start to up the mileage a little more. That being said, the 8-miles that I did yesterday were about at the limit before I could really start to feel fatigue in all these stabilizer muscles that I’ve been focusing on. I did sprinkle in a few up-tempo miles during the week, but I kept them pretty brief. In all three of those up-tempo segments (Mon, Wed, and Fri) the second-half was significantly faster than the first. On Friday, for example, the first mile was about 6:15, while the last 1.1 was at about 5:46. Saturday’s run did include a couple of sub-seven minute miles, as I ran it progressively for the first 6.5 miles.
Well that was long! As always, I love to read about what you all are doing, regardless of where you’re at training-wise….it’s all part of the collective experience.
Cheers!
