I have a freshman kid who is a Muslim. He is very talented and can be an age group standout and can be anywhere on my top 7. He is Muslim so he has to go through Ramadan. Amongst other things he has to fast from sunrise to sunset. The period of Ramadan is from August 12-September 10th this year. My practice is at 7:30 AM (the sun has already risen) during the summer and during the school year it is at 2:30 PM. Should I just give him the workouts and let him do them all alone at around 4:30 AM, so then he can eat afterwards, or make him run at 7:30 AM and then let him starve until sunset. What about when school starts? I believe he can have water though. I've never coached a Muslim kid before. Also, since he is new, I fear that he wouldn't know pacing (recovery, tempo etc.) for many of the runs I give him and he will also do them alone which can be hard for some people. (if I choose to go the early in the morning route)
Thanks Let's run.
