I was just watching a replay of Ritz's race on the Universal sports sight. They have the American commentators - Dwight Stones and someone else - doing commentating. Very drab and not even very informative either. In contrast I also saw the vid of the race on flotrack with English commentating. So much better. The English were more excited about the Ritzenheim than the American commentators.
I also know that there was a great English commentator that did long distance racing throughout much of the 70s and 80s. Don't know his name. He called the 72 and 76 Olympics of which there is plenty of video on YouTube. The guy was great, he was dramatic and conveyed the excitement all while still being very informative and very knowledgeable. Somewhere on Youtube there are versions of both the English commentary and American commentary of the classic 72' 5000M race. Again, the English commentary is so much better than Jim McKay.
I'm actually not knocking the Americans so much as I'm giving great credit to the English commentators. I think they make it look a lot easier than it is. American universities should make recording of these Englishmen and teach it in communication programs.
