IF you watched the Olympics you saw a great team utterly destroyed by logic. From the 800m through the marathon logical thought systematically ruined every American athlete. If you ever attempt to become a runner your greatest enemy will always be a logical mind. You can not simply avoid intellegence, you have to destroy it or it will destroy you!
Every time you run a workout longer than 8 miles (which should be at least 5 times a week) start from step one with an all-out as-fast-as-your-legs-will-go SPRINT! No warm-up. no stretching. Just sprint as fast as you can for as long as you can. That beginning flies in the face of logic and unburdens you of evil practicality, setting you free to be yourself. Anything less than total committment to that sprint brings logic into play and sooner or later you will end up like the American team did at the Olympics.
The logic-encrusted reader of this post will of course find fault with my stupidity. What about the possibility of injury? What about oxygen deprivation? It is a stupid thing to do.
You have to understand what a terrible threat logic is to runners. Realize that in conserving energy, waiting until the finishing sprint, and maintaining contact with the front runners are all logical and rational thought patterns that will wipe you out just like they did our great team
in Beiging!
We runners live in a world of irrationality. Wasting energy gives you energy. Going out too fast sets you free. Sudden bursts of total committment sprinting in the middle of races elevates you to new levels of performance. Giving everything you have fills you with more than you could ever expect to posess in all your wildest imagination. Anything saved is lost forever.
