why not the trusty old fall back, the vodka tonic? those are damn near the best thing to drink if you aren't drinking beer. Nothing heavy about it in terms of taste or how it sits in your stomach. btw, if you are at a rather posh establishment, go one above grey goose and order Ciroc for you and a lady

Try whiskey and coke.

Start with maybe 10/90 ratio of whiskey/coke and go up from there as you become used to the taste. I drank this lots freshman year of college, and now as a junior, I can drink straight whiskey with no problem.

Buy Jack Daniel's, Ezra Brooks is horrible, but Evan Williams or Jim Beam are decent for the price, if you cannot afford the Jack.

Actually, he should probably do Old Crow and RC Cola if he can't afford the price. Jack is good, but come on, Tennessee whiskey is gonna taste the same across the board.

There is nothing wrong with vodka and cranberry juice, you just have to make it yourself and go half and half, but dont but it at the bar for obvious reasons. I would say you should try jack daniels and coke or rum and coke

Vodka tonic, gin & tonic, bourbon and coke. Scotch and soda is manly, but I can't stand the taste.
