I knew David was an awesome athlete but what a character! He obviously had a fun personality and enjoyed life. Another one gone way too soon. My condolences to his family. RIP

RIP Big Wave! This thread is the GOAT! Reminds me exactly why I love this sport so much!
I somehow missed this thread back in 2005. While reading it for the first time yesterday after the news of David's death, I thought he had pulled a classic troll job on readers of LR.
Hilarious that he actually went through with it and ran a downhill mile at 2 am on city streets.
LR LEGEND
RIP Big Wave
We all need to run a Downhill mile this week, all out.

How much does the Millennium Mile increase your performance?
not at all, you are the same runner right after the millenium mile as you were before it. Well, except for the handful that come out of it with a new *PR* and a bit deluded.
I am surprised there is not more opposition to this type of crap races/time trials. If I were a miler I would be insulted by these things. And if I was close to a sub 4 miler my oppostion would more staunch, I would think.
Eh, but who knows? Maybe if I were that close my view would take a complete *360*.

Apparently you missed the memo that this is just for fun, it's not as if he's going to go around flaunting his time and claiming to be faster than Alan Webb. Besides, he's apparently an excellent runner in his own right and probably will have a track sub four to go along with this performance in the future.
Way to go though, that had to be a freaking amazing experience blazing down a hill that fast at night with a bunch of people cheering you on.
I will not point out the irony of your post.
couple things:
1. WHo you calling "Old"? Ream_ick, SCream_ick or whatever your name.
2. What's a 3:43 kid, at 19 no less, doing jerking aroung with these sort of things. I would be investing every ounce of energy I had into trying to make up that few seconds that Webb has on you. Shoot, you are damn close.
Does Webb do these types of things? I don't know, but I doubt it. Why is that?
3. I know, that's more than a couple, once you are in that Elite Club - sub4 - you'll thank a-holes like me for protecting the term sub-4. Sub 4 means one thing.
4. Is there a Master division in next years event? This could be the kind of event that would give my career a complete 360.
huh?
Retort.
1. psst, DT, (can I call you that?) You were 18 when you ran the 3:43.
2.It's your career, but you made yourself good enough for those of us who are merely fans to take notice and to comment.
3. A friend of mine, who is a great athlete by the way, uttered these profound words, "anyone can get drunk, but only a few have the opportunity that I have".
I like to drink beer but it does not make me or anyone cool.
4. I am not a sub 4 miler.
5. My career is certainly on the downhill and it has been for quite some time. I can only pray for a miracle 360.
6. I give you points for almost showing sense of humor.
7. The window is only open for a short time. and then it slams shut.
8. but as we age we lose talent, not a complete loss though, you know the saying: When God closes a door....well you know the rest.

he floods the freaking basement and your insurance company refuse to cover it.
actually the kid is pretty good, and documented; which is why I hate downhill miles, or any kind of mile not on a track.
20 years from now his kid will be in school and telling his friends that his dad broke a 4 minute mile (which DT seemingly will do easily) and then kid#2 pipes in "so did my dad", except that kid#2's dad might be some schlep with 4:25 speed who ran the 4rth annual David Torrence Downhill Invitational and actually did run under 4 minutes. It just ain't right.
Roger Maris is still the King!

Well good thing you are not a miler, and not a good miler at that. But thanks for your opinion.

My college roommate and teammate ran one of these road miles in a *legit* race and he broke 4 minutes.
He was not allowed to speak of it in our apartment.

Maybe you should, since there is none. Stop trying to appear intelligent.

Sounds like you are still harboring some jealousy over your former roommate's accomplishments. You're lucky he didn't kick your ass for trying to regulate what he is allowed to talk about in his own apartment. What a douche bag you are.

I think he might have been 18 when he ran the 3:43. And Alan Webb couldn't run a 4:04 alone. Never mind. Yes he could.
Hopefully the running club dude can provide a compressed version too (less than say 5 or 6 MB) for those of us with dial-up connections...
I'm not sure what's up with *****. This sounded like not much more than a time trial effort-wise. I doubt it will affect any workouts tomorrow, much less the up coming track season.
Hey *****,
I think we've gotten off track here. I did this downhill mile because I thought it would be a lot of fun, and you know what? It was. I don't know what your problem is with somebody else having fun with their life, but maybe you should check that out. I respect your opinion that "I'm doing the wrong thing" or something, but all I got to say is: I'm not sore at all, I had a blast, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Hope that settles anything.
P.S. I was 18 when I ran that 3:43?!! I did not know that!!! Crazy.
***** is just upset with his life and wishes he was DT.
Anyone else think ***** is a dickweed?
