Emmanuel Korir put his 400 speed to good use in a tactical 800 final as Clayton Murphy and Nijel Amos were last and second to last respectively.

Most of the major favorites advanced to the semifinals including all 3 Americans led by an impressive Clayton Murphy. The stellar women's 400m hurdles also got underway.

The mid-d and distance on Day 1 of London was fantastic. It featured big wins for Laura Muir and Hagos Gebrhiwet, another amazing performance by Norwegian wunderkind Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and disaster for Nijel Amos. Plus a Canadian record in the women's 1500.

Nijel Amos was the last man to go sub 1:42 back in 2012 until he did it again in Monaco.

Emmanuel Korir had the best 800 season since David Rudisha's magical 2012 campaign. Meanwhile, Clayton Murphy started off both indoors and outdoors slowly but nearly returned to his Olympic bronze medal winning form.

If you missed the 2018 Paris DL, you missed a truly incredible meet. From a 46.98 men's 400 hurdles - the fastest time in more than 25 years - in the first event to a 9.88 world leading 100 in the last event, this meet had world leaders literally from start to finish. In between, there was 1:54 women's 800 and a 3:29 men's 1500. This meet had excellence in it from start to finish.

History very well may repeat itself in the men's 800 this year. But will it be David Rudisha winning again in London or might it be an upstart NCAA freshman star winning a global title? And don't sleep on Nijel Amos.

Kenya's Ferguson Rotich (47.84 first 400 on 800 leg) and Timothy Cheruiyot (51.96 first 400 on 1,600 leg) ran like mad men while the quartet of Kyle Merber, Brycen Spratling, Brandon Johnson and Ben Blankenship (3:51.24 anchor) ran superbly to get the win and the world record in a race like no other.

The men's 800 is one of the most exciting races in all of track and field. Tons of superstars and lots of diversity as men from seven different countries nabbed spots in our global top 10. Where is David Rudisha?

Let there be no doubt. Nijel Amos is the best 800m man in the world in 2014. Amos, already the Commonwealth Games champion and the African champion, is now the Diamond League champion after his 1:43.77 win versus a stacked field.
