I just got my $24,000 check for the year.
I got paid the $1200 and am grateful but I'd rather them send it to those who need it. I didn't even feel good about getting it--we shouldn't have to be in this position b/c people dropped the ball in Jan.-Mar.

In Europe the government is generally paying 75-90% of furloughed workers salaries for the duration of the lock down.
It was implemented fairly quickly and the money goes to those who need it. When things return the normal, people still have their jobs and their company will resume paying them.
Why didn’t the US apply a similar plan?
That's kind of what the US did. Most laid off workers are (or will once the unemployment increase happens) making than they did working.
Great idea!! Maybe go all the way, give people $1,000,000 so people can get luxury cars, boats, etc . Except who is going to build sell boats, cars if they can just stay home and get a million dollars. I have a cow so i am going to start selling the milk $250/gallon, otherwise i will just do nothing and get my million
I'd prefer job guarantees where 80% of salary under a certain threshold is paid through the business to the workers to preserve their jobs while the business cannot operate. They have done that in Europe and it means that they aren't going to have 30% unemployment like we will. It worked in the last recession, where many European countries were able to keep massive unemployment spikes from happening. When you have a job and are paid for it while you are unable to work because of a national crisis like this, it gives a sense at least of belonging and security in the knowledge that you will have a job when the country opens up again, and it results in significant long-term benefits to the nation.
Earnings limits make sense. As long as I am employed, I'd prefer the money to go to those in need and I might make that happen. For the time being, though, it may be necessary for many to bank the funds in case their jobs vanish. And the fact that many will bank the money means that stimulative effects will be reduced even beyond the limited ways in which we can spend our money now.
Great news.
Looking forward to more Avocado toasts in the next 6 month.
And no I don't feel bad about it. If Boeing can ask for $60 Billion, my $12,000 are peanuts.

Doesn't a lengthy and generous unemployment benefit make more sense? If they give this stimulus money to people still working and making money it makes zero sense to me.
Not really. People working are hoarding cash. They get $2000 per month, it'll fire up the economy. We can't have stocks going down.

I think what they are finding with the unemployment benefits currently is that a lot of people don't qualify for some reason or another, or the calculation gets thrown off and they get a lot less than they were earning at their job. This cuts through all the bureaucratic red tape and just throws it out there. I think there have been some studies on this and it's why Yang was pushing for UBI, and why certain charities just give money directly to poor people.
It's unlikely to pass anyway.
Everyone that's feeling bad can go donate their money.....that's what the word "stimulus" means folks.
It takes resources to figure out who deserves it and who doesn't. The government doesn't have those resources. They don't even have the resources to get enough masks for people. 130 is generous though, 70k is probably a better cutoff.
I think the argument of giving the $$$ to everyone is that people who are still employed will be encouraged to use their checks to help stimulate the economy. I'm in full support of bailing people out. Look at what United just did with their handout -- took the money & fired front line workers. Corporations can't be trusted when handed big checks. Better for the government to help everyone through the next few months, keep people on their feet, and then hope we come out on the other side.
Yea exactly. I owed taxes on my side business so it was nice to have that extra 12 hundred but I didn't need it per say.
The argument for giving everyone a check is for the stimulus effect, but it's misguided because you can't stimulate industries that are shut down, even if you must consider the overly-simplistic Keynesian circular flow model, which is hard to get away from because it's simplicity is so easy for lay persons to understand.

Look into 'basic income', 'unconditional income'. Quite a popular concept that was actually being tested in Europe, who would've thought it would be implemented in America first.

Spain beat us to it. Will certainly mean some inflation, but otherwise it’s gotta be an improvement over the current state of things.
Anyone up and arms about it has their priorities out of whack. Way bigger fish to fry.
I would prefer this to corporate bailout money. I am real concerned how the initial 2.2 trillion rescue package is being distributed. It seems to have to potential for misallocation, crony capitalism, and outright fraud.
seems more effective to just give people their money back and let the individual determine how to spend it.
i'm in the very lucky position to work from home and have a steady paycheck. I received a portion of the stimulus check and donated some and will use u the rest towards a home improvement project. I'll hire local workers so it goes right back to support employment.
my main concern is if we add this on top of the existing relief package it will blow up deficits and lead to hyperinflation. already bought tons of gold and silver.
Had a worker quit rather than return to work yesterday thinking that she could continue to leech off the government for the next six months. We tried to explain to her that unemployment benefits cease if you are offered your job back, but her boyfriend has her convinced that she can continue to collect benefits. The idiocy of the decision still baffles us as even if she is able to keep benefits, in a couple of months when those run out, she will be looking for a job in the worst job market in probably our lifetimes.

This. I'm working everyday around people WITH covid-19 in a dialysis setting where I'm inches from them. You others want to make a case that because I have a job I should be happy and not included in the pay? Simply because I have a job?

Working in medicine you should assume everyone you treat is contagious with something even when COVID is not around and always exercise standard precautions. Your behavior last year should be the exact same as it is today. It is an unfortunate part of the job. At least you are still able to perform your job and earn a living as a lot of Americans are not as fortunate. You are no more of a hero than anybody else doing their job.
