Different conditions and closings in different places. Guy in Colorado or wherever posts all the beautiful forests he runs in and says ya, no races, but its great to train here, getting higher mileage than ever before, everyone should be getting killer mileage with work from home...
Totally insensitive to places that aren't different and it seems these guys are unwilling to consider that the closings may not be the same in other areas. As has been stated, some drainage ditches are open in El Paso. Drainage ditches - does that sound like an interesting place to train? Run for months with the majority of one's mileage in freaking drainage ditches?
The runner who the thread is about is an 800 guy. A middle distance guy isn't doing long distance mega mileage (unless maybe he follows a lydiard scheme) and needs access to a track year round to train optimally. Even people base training for xc would do best to get on a track at least every week to two for a set of easy reps.
People can train if there is nothing but a mall parking lot to run around. Would you want to do all your running in a mall parking lot for a month? How about if you were a high level athlete? Ya, he can go run in whatever sprawl is around him in El Paso, which is barely a step up. I don't know what you know about El Paso, but a dense city that gets 10 inches of rain a year isn't going to have grass fields apart from public parks and school and university fields - which are closed.
