Due to Governor Dewine’s closure of gyms, and each day requiring stronger and stronger (although for the better) social distancing, I’ve considered building a base again. Or just transitioning entirely into ultra running for the remainder of spring for myself.
All races are canceled, I live in the middle of nowhere, and I’ve been running 90-100 mpw between concrete, treadmill, and trail. Two real workouts and nothing more.
With school online, free time like no other, why not just try to run as much as possible for a while and do some stupid challenges?
These should be done alone and follow the social distancing protocols already set aside ofcourse
Some ideas:
- DIY timed race (5 hours, 12 hours, etc.)
-DIY Marathon/50k or more
-1 mile an hour for 24 hours / last man standing (you can’t lose since you’re the only man/woman)
-Takeout 20 miler: Run half of your long run to your favorite takeout place/local business and finish the other half while running with the food itself or after eating it
-Pub run +: run to your local pub, cry in front of the closed sign, run back home.
Anybody think of any random running challenges to keep us entertained yet challenged during this time? I feel like now is better than never to take everything VERY easy and VERY slow and because of this we can do it VERY alone. No need to get competitive, compare times or train outside your heart rate or abilities, just good old fashioned isolation
Here are my Coronavirus Challenges to keep you sane

Not if you’re high enough. -
Just don't do anything that might make you need to use A&E, and weaken your immune system. Those diy race distances you listed seem way too risky.
-
Are they really that risky? I kind of considered them fun and relaxing so long as you keep yourself warm, hydrated, and nutritionally sound.
Nothing should be done hard enough that it would weaken you and require A&E services I agree. That’s why I’d recommend just taking it at a slower pace. There’s nothing wrong with going slower just go longer right? Listen to some good e-books and podcast. -
Running slow is only boring if you let it be

I get a good endorphin rush from running slow but listening to the rocky series soundtracks

Yes! Rocky is the best.
Also running in the middle of the night is a lot of fun. -
i just did a lovely 8 mile run on 1.5" of snow on country roads. Saw a few neighbors and dogs out for a walk but kept my distance. a gorgeous morning to get out and enjoy fresh air. You can still find good workouts around....

I actually ran to the polling location this morning at 4:00 am thinking I was going to earn a quick $100 as a broke college kid. Never got the message that Ohio’s primaries were delayed. Freezing cold and rain, it made for an interesting 10 miler. But it was fun. My next run will be another 6 this evening to pickup curbside beer from my local brewery.
We can still get in workouts, but at this point we are not training for anything. Atleast not in Ohio and I feel like it’s our duty as a community to support our local businesses during this tough time and keep the community strong.
I’ve been seeing a strong rise in the use of #rallycolumbus and a lot of the local stores and running programs have now provided free training programs. -
Weather isn’t stopping me from good workouts. It’s those race specific workouts and the cancelation of all races and any chance of competition in Ohio is what’s stopping me.
I think we will further shut down and quarantine, and that’s okay. But to keep ourselves motivated, or atleast myself, I need something to work towards at this moment. These challenges are meant to be fun, not so hard you’ll crash and compromise your immune system, and just be fun in a time that is anything but fun -

If you're avoiding contact with others you can weaken your immune system just fine with a hard run.
Different situation if you're still going out -
DeWine isnt keeping me from a 60 mile week while home.

A time trial isn't a bad idea. The rest of your ideas are a bit silly. Use the time to explore new places. There is no schedule pressure on your training, so try trails you've never run before. -
The silly ideas are meant to be silly, just fun for the sake of it.
I am going to be exploring some new trails tomorrow for fun. I’m excited to get a little muddy in the rain and creeks. -

whoa check out Dr. Funkiller here with the spicy take -
Challenge done today: Run slow and commute to my local coffee shop and grab takeout, try and deliver the donuts bought without shaking the box or spilling coffee.
Yeah it was silly, but it was fun for an easy morning 7 miles. Got to deliver some homemade donuts to a family in town without a car and got a free coffee out of it. Fun stuff.
Remember to support your local businesses and post and fun challenges you can think of to keep ourselves entertained during this pandemic. I'm assuming we will further shutdown other non-essential services soon enough, so I'm having fun while it last. -
For us over 65:
Use one of those baby-buggy push-strollers to run to the markets for that "seniors only" time slot to pick up your pre-arranged order, grab your stuff and rocket home...
before the governor's geriatrics task force can nab you for breaking his home-restriction for seniors.
You do have markets with "seniors-only" time slots, right?
Your governor did impose home restriction on seniors, is that not so?
Ok, the cray cray is at work. -
My local area doesn't have any stores with Senior only shopping hours yet, but I'm strongly advocating for it in my area. I've been approaching the local businesses since I'm back home where there are few shops and only 1500 ish residents.
Mr. Dewine as far as I know hasn't imposed any home restrictions on seniors, but maybe he's held a press conference and said something? I'm not sure. I'm taking everything day by day.
