Waimsley would be outkicked by virtually everyone else in the top 30.
He is the one who needs to go out fast and to create a gap. He would need to go on his HM best pace to have a chance to qualify.
If he can"t run sub 2:10, he is going to have several other athletes and jis pathetic and non existant ultrarunner kick will prove to be his fatal flaw.

"gamer"? he falls apart in competition. His impressive runs are all solo efforts, or race where he gets a big lead and crushes. If Rupp throws a 4:40 in at mile 22 - Jim cannot hang. The guy is an aerobic MONSTER, but he is not a gamer at all.
Also, everyone's been saying they like having Jim in the mix for his "personality" WTF? He doesn't say anything interesting or behave in an interesting way - he just does big crazy workouts. I think a lot of Walmsley fans are just people rooting for an outsider and projecting qualities onto him that they want their hero to have.
I predict he runs 2:11 and finishes 11th.

Interested in hearing who the ten people running sub 2:11 are

Fast forward to 10:30 in the video. 2:35 last km in this race. Ward (older than Walmsley) was left well behind.

2:35 last km in a slow 5k?
That's pedestrian for top level.

That's faster than Ward. He was in that race. Few of the top 30 (to be) at Trials ever had that speed.
Not necessarily sub 2:11. A large pack will run around 2:11 pace for most of the race. It will break apart at 20 miles with the winner sub 2:10 but a bunch of guys finishing 2:10-2:11-2:12.

He opened it up. The commentators were saying 2min for the last 1k.

Lol , 2min would be the world record for 1k.
He ran in 2m35 and that's an very average finish in a not fast race. Bekele and top 5 000 runners can finish in 2:25 or even less if needed and in much faster race, not in 13:50.
Do you think Lagat is impressed by that?

Run a halfway decent race. All those guys are way better marathoners.
Should be the other way around

Thank you. This board is obsessed with the guy. I like a underdog but wow he really has a ton of fans on this board.
Sidenote I am rooting on Chris Derrick and Emma Bates to make it

The real question is whether Walsmley is impressed by times Lagat ran 20 years ago. This is a marathon not a track race.

100% agree, not hating on him at all, he just isn't at the level that a lot of people are pretending.
Finish.

Not that I think Lagat will make the team but he won Peachtree outright as a masters runner only two years ago. Walmsley will never even top that in his career and it isn't even a footnote for Lagat. Dude we're talking about Lagat...I really can't wait for this race to be over with and all these fanboys can go home devastated.

Frankly, I don't think anyone in the field has a viable strategy to deal with Walmsley.
They take it out slow? Walmsley is really, really, really good at running slow, as he's shown the world again and again. 100 mile races? Hellooo? That is his world.
They go out fast? Well, guess what? Walmsley recently ran a 1:03 half marathon. 'nuff said.
Ran 1:03 at half means nothing while trying to maintain that pace another 13.1 miles. I ran 1:06 in the half and I thought I had Jesus grabbed by the balls and that I could easily run 2:15 or 2:16, at least in my mind. I was lucky to run 2:21 in the full distance. Easier said than done.
