I know Jim's season is really geared towards the Comrades Marathon, but Walmsley is a gamer and he will be ready to race on Saturday. So how do they beat him?

They hope he can't keep up when one of them speeds up at around 21 or 22 miles.
Go out in 1:03 for the first half and make it hurt.

Walmsley is not considered to be a threat to make the team so why would the top runners have a strategy against him? A fast pace is likely to drop him and he doesn't have the track speed to cover surges after a slow first half.
There is exactly a .000003 percent chance that this will go out at 1:03.
Great question - the only hope is that Fauble, Ward, etc can run 2:10 or faster otherwise it's Jim for 3rd place. There is no doubt in my mind now that Jim can run sub 2:10 on this course. He has a proven history of doing things he says he's going to to do. If he says he thinks he's in 2:10 shape then GOBBLE GOBBLE MFers it's on.
None of them will be the least bit concerned with Walmsley. I doubt Rupp or Korir even know who he is.
When Jim W. grabs Rupp by the collar and chugs a beer in his face after he will.
These guys definitely know and are thinking about Walsmley. He's had 3 mainstream national media articles about him recently.
The only media coverage of Rupp besides the doping accusations is Eugene local sportswriter Ken Goe.

You mean like Ron Clarke didn't know who Billy Mills was?
They don't care about some 1:03 short course guy. It's just like when Farah ran 2:05 and won Chicago, afterwards Kipchoge said that was too slow. He won't even beat any of the old guys if they have a decent race.
yes he will, you just don't know it yet.

Galen Rupp is a lot better than Ron Clarke and Jim Walmsley is a lot worse than Billy Mills.
The strategy is simple. Just run 2:09 marathon pace and he'll drop off around miles 18-20.
" He confirmed his seminal role a year later, leading out the 1985 Chicago Marathon at 4:44 pace, dropping in a bombshell 4:34 to kill off Kigen, and reaching halfway in 61:42, sub-4:43 average. He finished in 2:07:13, one second slower than the record Lopes had set that spring. "
Jim is the ultimate hobby jogger hero, and while I think he is very good, I don't think his raw talent is in the top 20 runners in this race. If he is forced to run several miles under 5 minute pace he won't last too long. If he wants a shot he needs to race it like Brian Sell did in 2007. Just run even splits at a pace that he can handle and hope he is in the top 3 at the end of the race.
I am pretty sure they don't care. They are experienced Marathon runners who know what they have to do. They are not worried about the guy who barely qualified with a Half Marathon.

Frankly, I don't think anyone in the field has a viable strategy to deal with Walmsley.
They take it out slow? Walmsley is really, really, really good at running slow, as he's shown the world again and again. 100 mile races? Hellooo? That is his world.
They go out fast? Well, guess what? Walmsley recently ran a 1:03 half marathon. 'nuff said.
