is cabada a former great?
Cabada is running?
Ritz and Lagat are a class above the others. Puskedra is not old, just formerly retired.

Is Puskedra running? I thought he retired? I guess I miss something...
He has unretired
I think we are forgetting someone - Ryan Vail - Boom

Aren’t Hasay and Rupp also ‘former greats’?
Rupp is only 33 and got a medal at last olympics

Legat was 5th at the last Olympics and beat Rupp at the trials

He unretired in the sense that he found out like everyone else that you can still run 100 mile weeks while working a normal job.
Back to the original post, I think Lagat has best bet to be in the mix. I'm kind of expecting him to be in it.

Lagat
I would be surprised to see Ritz or Lagat with the leaders at 20M, but heck I'd love it if they were there.
Of the two, Lagat will be top 10. Not sure of fitness of either just now.
In retrospect, Ritz was world class at 5K, and maybe 10K, but never at 26.2.
Lagat on behalf of all of us aging has-beens and never-weres.
OK, maybe Ritz was a world class marathoner when he ran 2:07 in Chicago.
And didn't he run 2:08 after that in Boston? But the Boston run wasn't world class. He tried to run away for the win and the east Africans ate him up.

I agree Lagat was still great in 2016. Its 4 years later now and Rupp has still been winning marathons and is only 33, hes obviously not a former great. You can make the argument that Lagat is still great too but Rupp is the heavy favorite to win the trials so it would be ridiculous to call him a former great
Lagat is the only real threat here. He has a legitimate shot. You know I'll be watching!
Ritz and Derrick are my sentimental favorites.
Lagat will be there at 20m. He is running to make the team, not for the experience. You need to be within striking distance to have any chance, so he’ll be there, but may fall off shortly after.
I wish Meb was in it....maybe 2024.
To me the true dark horse is Luke Puskedra. Let's not forget he got 4th at the 2016 trials. He has very quietly come out of retirement to run the trials and he is not one to do something just for fun. He no longer relies on running for his job and there is zero pressure on him to do well. I have no idea what type of shape he is in, but he certainly has the talent to run at that level. He was also only 26 at the 2016 trials.

He ran a 65 half at a tiny Eugene race in November.
