Hey everyone! I am a college runner who had two stress fractures (tibia and femoral neck) in quick succession my freshman year. I had a solid sophmore year of training and ran the first half of this year as a junior at the top of my cross country team. Now, it looks like a have a stress reaciton or possible fracture in my foot. I will likely be out about 6 weeks and have to slowly build up milage again.
I am looking for any advice on maintaining fitness through cross training. Currently biking intervals, between 15-20 miles a day with alternating "tempo" and resistance. I am going to continue to lift upper body and strengthen all muscles I can without causing damage, and keep my diet consistent. Has anyone come out the other side of an injury without a huge hit to endurance? I know I will not be back at the same level, but looking for any way to mitigate the damage.
Finally, if anyone has gone through this or is currently, do you have any advice for dealing with the emotional side of not running? I am pretty devestated to be taken off the track again after a year of killing myself to regain fitness from previous injuries. I am not concerned with racing so much as the fact that running brings me more joy than anything else, and I am really struggling to get through the days without it. Everything related, even tangentially (blue sky, my pre-meet snacks, all the runners I follow on social media, my friends...) is breaking my heart right now. Would be super gratedul for any sort of advice.
