Regarding doubles at 75miles: It sounds like everybody's different (GoFaMiAnHo, Tyler), but 75miles with 2-3 doubles is way more manageable for me than all singles. Especially if you're not marathon training. Almost universally, with the exception of after some really hard workouts, the second run of the day always feels better than the first. I am pro doubles.
I can definitely see the benefit of doubles for people who can make them work. For myself, I always just tended to get really run down/beat up. That being said, I suspect that part of the problem was that I was racing my training a bit (bad habit I picked up in college, when I was in way over my head and trying not to fall too far off the back of the pack). So, could be that smarter training would have made doubles more sustainable for me. I wouldn't rule out trying them again, but logistics/family situation would make it tricky to do them consistently, and I don't know whether it makes sense to do them inconsistently. Thinking about it, though.
Tyler: Awesome race!
Stone: Nice bounce back week and nice progression on the long run for Mrs. Stone. And good thoughts on the long run. The functional approach is probably best from a coaching perspective.
HHW: Sounds like you’re in a great place with your fitness, and if the Achilles is coming around then you should be set up for a really strong race. (Also a good thing that you stayed out of the river! Swimming the Connecticut at this time of year is not the ideal cross-training…) On the non-running side of things, hope your kid is feeling better! We went through that with our daughter when she was around two, and it was definitely scary and stressful. It’s gotten better, partly because her doctor put her on medication that helped, and partly because she just grew out of it, I think.
GT: Nice mileage and what looks like a super-strong long run. Definitely hear you on the snow.
JQ: Looks like a great week to me. Had a chance to get off the treadmill a bit more?
RRR: Yeeowch! Other than that, good to see you back at it. Are the running and the lifting working well together at this point?
OR: Great to see you getting back to yourself. What’s the distance for Shamrock?
GNR: Nice solid week. Like the design of that strength/speed workout. (Though like darkwave, I had to read it a few times to figure it out…)
TL: Nice work building up the mileage, with some good quality mixed in. I had fun running the Brooklyn Half, though when I did it they had the finish in the park, instead of Coney Island, which I think is what they do now.
Sam: Solid week. Interesting that your pace for the 4800 was pretty close to what you ran for the 3 x 1600 earlier in the week, especially considering the wind (and possibly solo effort?).
DB: Cross country is always fun, but never been a mudder myself, so sympathize with you on that score. As darkwave says, part of it is gait, but there’s a mental component, too, not letting it get in your head.
coffee dad: Congrats on hitting 50 for the week! Tough but very good workout with that fartlek, and nice trail workout, too. 13 miles can be a pretty long run on hilly trails, particularly if you go by time (which I would tend to do).
darkwave: Strong week in spite of rough weather. Fortunately all the pool running has you well prepared to deal with localized flooding, should it come to that.
stat: Solid week. Congrats on the mile win.
surgical: Welcome to the thread. Hope the foot heals up.
Sub 6: Solid week, but kind of concerning that the foot issue came back. How was it later in the week?
mdubs: Congrats on the PR! 19 seconds is a nice chunk of change. Have a good run in the 10k coming up.
NiceGuy: Solid week with a couple of substantial workouts. Some people like to do strides the day before workouts, to kind of prime the legs, so if you usually do workouts on Monday and Friday, Sunday and Thursday would make sense for strides. Alternatively, some people like to do strides at the end of workouts, kind of the way you did the 100s on Monday. You could try both approaches and see which works better for you.
BTW, I ran in the Pegasus in high school and they were shin splint city for me. Granted, that was like thirty years ago now.
Guy: Nice solid week. Spent a year teaching in Ohio and was surprised by how snowy and generally wet the winter was. Ever run Mohican State Forest? Loved the trails there.
Pappy: Simple plan: (1) Run until you can (2) Catch pig. (3) Make more sausage.
AJ: Monster week. And fun story about running through the flood. Had a somewhat similar experience one time that involved splashing through schools of carp.
fnd: Nice solid week. Agree with you about the on/off workouts.
Lanc: Solid bounce back week. Progressions are a good way to get your legs back under you.
Powsloke: Nice volume and strong efforts on the Wednesday and Sunday runs. Windy 15k tempo shows some real mental toughness.
jewbacca: Good to hear that you’re healthy and making progress.
pewow: Good work with the rust buster and a nice mix for the week.
RunnerFC: Solid week building back up. Sounds like some fun variety with the cross-training.
cocoon: Nice mileage and a couple of solid workouts. Cranking out the longer efforts always seems to be a strong suit for you.
RGM: Fun to be back at it, isn’t it? Re the Timex: I think it’s a good idea to cut back on the data a bit, particularly at this stage in the game.
