Are they actually better than any other option over shorter distances like 5k/10k on a road surface? I've heard a lot of mixed comments saying they aren't. I've even never seen anyone with a pair around where I am in the UK.

Why the f do you care about strava segment times
Are you duncan daft dude? My handle is literally Stravazzi! I've already discussed through this thread why I care...
Dude inspired by you I've been hunting down my local segments this past week left right and centre wearing my carbon plated beauties!
Thanks buddy for the heads up. My ego has been well boosted.
Loser.
Why wouldn't you just purchase a pair of VF and put yourself on a level playing field?
People doing 2:00/mile pace on running segments laugh at the vapor flies. Two wheels beats two spring shoes.
Not on my watch they don't - I flag any activity marked as a run which contains a continuous effort of sub 2:40 min mile pace for more than 10 seconds.
Actually not sure I still need to do that since Strava introduced it's auto flagging algorithms.
Let me break you some much needed bad news: You don’t make the rules as much as you fantasize about it.
1-The “illegitimate” spring we’re declared legal. Get it over with.
2-You don’t own Strava, they make the rules. You don’t like them? Get the $$$ and buy them so you can run your little insignificant dictatorship from it.
3- you need to get a REAL life and stop obsessing over petty things, mature, grow up. Or what’s is it? The corona virus shelter in place made you snap?
And please allow me to break some apparent news to you - I am 100% aware I'm not setting what is "legal" or not on Strava per se. And if you've actually read what I've been saying about the issues that concern me you should be painfully aware of that fact.
What I'm talking about is ethics / the spirit of competition. If you don't have any, i.e. re Vaporflys in this thread (which some clown comedian decided to bump - this thread is months old) or thinking its ok to piss all over the "kids" parade because your balls been taken away for a few months (boo boo) then I guess you ain't going to understand what I'm talking about.
Who really needs to grow up here? The guy talking ethics without any insightful reply or the guys looking to beat down on what they'd otherwise consider "hobbyjoggers" to give them a "competitive" kick?
These threads are so much better than actually buying advertising
I’m going to purchase some VFs and club your parents in the head for raising someone who complains so much about things that matter not at all. They’ll be ashamed at themselves but also impressed at the quality of footwear that so efficiently smacked them between the eyes.
Strava segments are a waste of time. They mean nothing, no one cares about them, you can cheat by using a bike/scooter etc. and they may all be deleted one day. On the other hand, you say you think races are pointless but they're not because you will have an official PR which can't be taken away. You have got this all back to front.
As for the vaporflys, I can run maybe 5 seconds per mile faster over a 5k compared to a pair of cheap shoes.
