Looks like Bekele has opted out of the 5k at Helsinki. Does this possibly open the doors for a Mottram gold? He's got a great shot now that Bekele is out and I can't see anyone being able to drop him as he's shown he has a great kick.

Mottram has done well this year and has a big heart.....but he's playing with the big boys now.... Lets see how he copes with team tactics and racing with a lot of surges rather than at a steady tempo.... I think he'll finish fifth or sixth
oh darn, i already voted.
he's got good speed and guts but he is literally going to be out there by himself. Team Kenya and Ethiopia will choose a victor and make sure the other 2 guys they have in the final escort them to the finish line.
I will be pulling for him tho. His 12:56 and fast 1500 show he has the tools to medal for sure.
What is your source for saying this? He said a couple of days ago that he was running. You or somebody has posted several times in the past few days that he was out. The only link was one from months and months ago.

Mottram IS one of the big boys already. (and no I'm not talking about physical size)

Well aren't you a gay one! A big boy ehhh ;)
I am no sure that Kenenisa doesn=t run 5k. One thing is his proposal, another thing the decision of Ethiopian Federation. Await after 10k, tgen you see what it happens...

so bekele and lagat aren't considered big boy's?
i think mottram came within point something seconds of beating the biggest big boy of them all in bekele just a couple weeks ago.

Bekele was in second gear
Mottram has a medal chance but can't see him beating Songok
That's a good one; screw up everyone else's voting so that you can win the contest yourself.
To go along with that, Alan Webb is the only one running the 1500 and Paula Radcliffe has opted into the men's races.
dude, you can change your picks.

This article says otherwise.
no doubt about it, kenenisa will not compete andhe is not in position. As we all know, he lost his fiancee recently and for such wc you need a long and unin trupted trainning.
therefore, it better to see other compteter will win it specialy Kenyan
This will break James Templeton's heart. He was bracing for a Bekele-Kipchoge-Songok race.
Me too.
I gurantee you he will run. That report was as of the 5th and therefore before his doubt surfaced. But he's going to feel a lot better after winning today and hopefully recover well enough for the heats in a few days. Plus, I think also that Tirunesh will be a great inspiration for him.
Meanwhile, I think Tariku will step up BIG time to challenge a medal.
Selassie, better to gave up. this moring i hread through ethiopian news agency that bekele will not run.
and it is less likely, ethiopian to win 5000mr gold
Mesfin,
If he doesn't run, it's totally understandable afterall he's gone through. However, he said that he won't right after the 10K race where emotions can be a tad unsettled. Who knows what he'd be feeling today..or tomorrow? I am not ready to give up yet.
I am also hoping that another ET will step up, one such could be Tariku, and bring our nation at least another Gold and Silver.
Selassie
I'd be surprised if Mottram doesn't medal. Who in that field has a 3:48 speed? Not many.
