- Apple Watch (series 4 can be had a significant discount these days)
- Fitbit Versa 2 or Ionic
- Garmin Forerunner 235
There are a lot of “better” watches, but not
Garmin 245
Solid running watch with lots of functionality while still keeping the price reasonable.
Ill second the garmin 235. can be had for under $200 now. DOes it all. looks decent.
Garmin 645 is hard to beat. Faster and more accurate than the 235 (or so it seems?)
Polar vantage m. Best heart data period.
Apple Watch 4 discounted plus Stryd pod clocks in close to 400. Can’t be beat for music/podcasts plus good data. I always felt like Apple Watch was a not great running watch (I need LTE to get daycare calls if kids are sick). But the Stryd app is actually good, it’s more accurate too. Now I wouldn’t trade it for anything because no other watches have the non running features of the Apple Watch.

Thanks Erik, the Stryd pod looks interesting. How has your training/changed and improved since using it?
I just got the Coros Apex 46mm. Its pretty awesome. Simple, effective, fast and accurate GPS. The app is super fast and easy to use.
The only thing is the heart rate data when not exercising is a little off for me. I don't know if others have this issue, but it seems pretty accurate during exercise.
I picked up the Garmin 645 on Amazon for $245.00 on some pre-Christmas sale to upgrade from an old 225. Love it! Smaller form factor, wrist heart rate. Gives you some interesting new training data (estimate of VO2max, aerobic/anaerobic benefit) without a bunch of nonsense and cheerleading. Hits the satellite in a few seconds, which saves me a few minutes ahead of every run.
Apple Watch Series 4/5.
I was a hard core Garmin user for years and years. Finally switched to the Apple Watch and will never go back.
There are some tradeoffs (battery life, lack of triathlon capabilities), but they are worth it compared to the negatives of the Garmins I have used (have owned 6 over the past 12 years).

Just curious: What are your positives of the AW over Garmin that made you jump over? I was considering AW but for now I’m still sticking with Garmin 645 until it craps out... Then I’ll see where Apple’s at
Have to ask, what’s your take on overall accuracy of each? Distance, pace, etc.? I’ve had two Garmins, most recently the 230 forerunner (3 yrs ago). This year my family got me an apple 5 - cause I never take my phone in the mtns. - can’t run w/ it. Yeah, the battery life is a big downside for me, but I also noticed slight discrepancies in pace and distance between the two. Is this just a satellite or software issue?
Sorry - I meant this for Missouri 1600
Garmin ForeRunner 245. Do not, I repeat, do not, get an apple watch.
Get the 245. But:
1) download the Miles app. It’ll take you 3-4 mins to get a 20% off coupon code for Garmin.
2) go to Garmin and put it in your cart.
3) register for Rakuten. Click the 4% cash back for Garmin. If you’re new you should get $10 back on top of the 4%.
After this you should save $70 on the watch.
Problems with the Apple Watch.
1) touch screen is useless when sweaty
2) hr is garbage
3) battery life is garbage
4) taking splits is nearly impossible. Try double tapping a touch screen in the cold in gloves!
5) HealthKit is pretty restrictive
6) can’t program workouts
I could literally go on for probably 20 bullet points. I am literally given free Apple watches every new model and refuse to wear them for running any longer.
There are literally no upsides I can think of vs a garmin. What exactly are the value adds that you are referencing?
Coros Apex 46mm w/ an ANT+ Garmin HR strap.
Vivoactive 3 music
Best value garmin. Everyone dismissed it because it doesn’t say runner in its name, but it has all the same key features, plus tons of others the forerunners don’t have.
Maybe the touch screen was poor when it first came out, but at least on the current software I’ve never had any issues using it while running.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
