It's impossible to predict. Meanwhile, it's way too early for him to be running 10Ks. A better idea would be to have him play soccer or baseball until his HS school freshman year. There is no benifit from an early start and if he competes in middle school he should never run farther than 3 miles. Competing in middle school is relatively new and there have hundreds of great runners that waited until HS to start competing. Ryun began his Sophomore year.
I do agree that running 10Ks at 11 is early (and too early for some), but not all. They should be few and far between for sure. At least race effort 10ks. Slogging along with mom is not a big deal.
I do not agree with the notion that there is "no benefit" to running in MS. Indeed, while many kids do start track in HS, many more potential stars never tried track at any time and would have likely run in HS if they had ever tried it as youth.
Also, some are simply no good at, or not interested in, baseball or soccer. Also, high level youth training in any team sport is sadly all-encompassing. Your life is dedicated to it. And for most, its pointless in the end. A 30-45 minute jog (or 20' tempo, or 6x400) every day would be a far better idea for many kids. They could then study, goof off, play in instrument...whatever.
The thing people forget is the daily commitment involved in running is pretty minimal for youth.
