Nope. Never got that impression at all from any interactions with mormons I've had...which is a lot. I've lived in Utah and AZ my whole life. I've been to their worship services. I've occasionally heard about tithing, but certainly no more than at other church services I've been to. No passing the plate around in their buildings.
The overwhelming emphasis I get from the LDS is the importance of "ministering to souls". This wouldn't be a hard thing at all to prove. Look at the titles of talks at their last few general conferences(all available online). I bet maybe 1 in 20 talks is on tithing.
