From my experience, normally they award the top three positions based off gun time and the rest based off net time.
Which makes it possible for a chip time runner to beat the top three finishers.
Confusing. What if the top two runners are battling it out and finish around 31min. 3rd place falls back and is on 33 pace. Along comes a runner who passes him/her at the end by a couple seconds and chip time reveals 32:57, but a gun time of 33:10. If the now 4th place finisher at 33 flat gun time has a chip time of 32:56 does he get 3rd place or not?
Why not just allow a max net vs gun time. You can start anytime - crossing the timing mat within 30 seconds of the gun and your chip time will count no matter what. I have gotten to races late or have been squeezed back in the starting pack and it was worth 15-20 seconds easily and still won my age group.
