He’s Definitely currently the favorite to win NXN. Sprout ran 2 seconds slower at NXR than he did last year.
Is 13:54 the course record? He's gaining a gap on the team #2. Hope that kid holds on.

Well Young is definitely the favorite, but not because Sprout ran slower at NXR.
I would hope Sprout would only run fast enough to win (or even fast enough to qualify). He is definitely faster than he was last year. He crushed his times from last year at every meet he was going all out on. The only people going all out at NXR are (1) idiots, and (2) people who wouldn’t qualify for NXN if they didn’t.
Yes, both he and his teammate Aschebrenner broke the course record.
German Fernandez was a huge favorite at Footlocker Nationals, but ended up in third place, possibly due to not wearing spikes.

German was not healthy going in to footlocker
Good thing Nico has spikes.
Not allowed to wear spikes in California, correct?

Why win sectional by 30 seconds over your teammate with the state meet next week and NXN in two weeks? We will see what he has left in Portland.
His last hard race was October 12th at Clovis, this is a tune-up race for NXN. Nico has said he is just trying to win state instead of chasing time , so he won't burn out

not completely true--this rule only applies to cif (the state body that governs h.s. athletics) competitions, like the state championships.
it does NOT apply to footlocker (regionals or nationals) which is not a cif competition. you will see (and hear) kids wearing spikes, usually from out of california, on the mt. sac course for the west regionals race--not sure how common it is on the national course in san diego...
Why aren't they allowed to wear spikes?
This run was equivalent to a 13:26 at Woodbridge. Good to see he's gained a little bit of fitness as the season has gone on. He's the clear favorite for NXN, but that course in Portland is not what he's accustomed to racing on nor is the weather up there what he's used to. It should be a fantastic race.
Considering that his teammate also went under the old course record, and that he beat his teammate by about thirty seconds, this was obviously a good one. If he remains fresh and it is a good day, he may well be breaking the national records at whatever national championship course he's running.

I had a rude awakening my freshman year of college at my first "cross country" race. Being from CA, I had raced on basically dirt roads and manicured courses my entire high school career. Even my breakthrough to race Kinney Nationals my Sr year was essentially dry and on short grass. That first race on a sloppy, wet course with tall grass was a complete shock to the system.
He is probably one of the best runners I have personally seen come from out of California. He has a very good chance of running well at NXN and winning. Running in wet and muddy grass is definitely different than what he is used to in Southern California but he has been to NXN before so I am sure his coach has prepared him for NXN. Liam Anderson won last year but he is from Norcal which has muddy courses such as Golden Gate park when it rains. He is very good but there are some really good guys this year I wouldn't discount Matt Strangio from Norcal either. NXN 2019 will go down as a race to remember.
