I just have to wonder how the NCAA and IAAF manage to keep their competitions from descending into chaos without similar rigidly enforced rules.

Are you blaming the rule on "the Christian right or any other right wing segment of a religion?"
It was the feminists, progressives or leftists in France that fought to ban the hijab.

Well except for the log cabin boys, the Republicans do not exactly approve of your lifestyle me boy.

Good point. The Taliban would consider it idolatry and act accordingly like they in Afghanistan.
I coached at high school where i had many athletes wearing these. I asked the girls to wear solid black just like I did for all my athletes wearing under armor etc. Some girls wore more of their dress than others but I was waiting for an old school office to one day try to disqualify one of them but never did surprisingly. Guess my State is more forward thinking lol
Except it not a freakin hat
Her hijab is similar to a nun's wimple. While there are few, if any, nuns in Protestantism, there are many in Anglicanism/Episcopalianism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism.

Why does this need to be a rule? Why do you need an exception to wear a head garment in the first place?
Because without stupid rules, the people whose job it is to make and enforce stupid rules wouldn't be able to justify their own existence.
This exchange sums it up.

It’s no wonder Trump won Ohio.
The place must be full of racist, sexist, misogynist, xenophobic bigots.
Wait.
She could have raced in her hijab had her coach known the rules and followed them.
Oh.

No irony here at all
Wow are you dumb and uneducated. Just wow. How you you even survive in this world.
A stupid and unnecessary rule.
Recall running XC in freezing weather and most of us were wearing beanies, long sleeves and gloves.
Many were wearing tights also.

I've coached two girls in California who wore hijabs and it was never a problem. Ridiculous to disqualify someone for that or require an exemption in the first place. At the same time I think it's ridiculous to overreact to the situation. Best thing to do here is for Ohio to say, "Hey, this rule is obviously outdated or wasn't considering this could be an issue. She is officially reinstated as having finished and no exemptions are necessary in the future for hijabs." That's all it takes. It doesn't need to be a difficult thing.
To say women wearing hijab are modest, implies that women not wearing hijab are not modest.

Why should hate symbols be allowed in XC? It's the ultimate symbol of misogyny. If someone showed up with a Swastika T-shirt, I'm pretty sure they would be DQ'ed as well.
Let's not forget the function of the 'veil jail', imposed in this case on a 16yo girl: to stop Muslim men from getting so horny when they see a women's hair, that they can't resist and rape her.
Hate symbol? It's a symbol of modesty and self respect.
Ya know whats worse than an INCEL?
A whiney SJW tw@t like you.
Did Galen Rupp have to get an exemption for his NOPer ice hat, which actually conferred an advantage in hot marathon weather? Those should be banned entirely.

I chuckled imagining all the nuns (at my Catholic church growing up) wearing habits with swooshes. Maybe even the pope's hat with one!
Then I remembered this

That seems like a useful function actually.
I'll bett it's why Kenyan girls have shaved heads.
they'd have a field day at Boston 2018
Where would HS XC be without the geriatric powertripping refs?

It's a HS XC race! How does what one wears on their head give anyone and advantage or disadvantage?
HS xc uniform rules are over the top. The only rule should be that your team you run for is identifiable on the front and back of the jersey. Isn't that all that matters when it comes to the actual race? If a school wants to make rules about how it is represented in public which could dictate what racers wear, then that is up to the school. but the governing bodies of track and XC need to focus on putting on a race with an even playing field and stop being uniform cops.
The USA is so over the top about everything.
