It's basically a hat.

Actually you are allowed to wear it. You just need to get an exemption for it which she and or her coach failed to do.
Wow Ohio really has gone off the deep end...
Hard to believe they haven't had any students running xc wear a hijab before...

Its not written that the exception is required....no athletes wear winter hats in OH in later season races? gloves? .....

Yeah that's an important point I should have said that. Not sure if the coach made the right decision not to tell her -- probably yeah. Let her run, and if she does well he can still count it for varsity or whatever else the team cares about.
Gosh.
It’s no wonder Trump won Ohio.
The place must be full of racist, sexist, misogynist, xenophobic bigots.
Wait.
She could have raced in her hijab had her coach known the rules and followed them.
Oh.

Actually it is. Read page 7 of the OHSAA Cross Country manual.

From the girl:
The officials did not give me the same respect that they gave my teammate who was also violating a rule when they told her to change her shorts and gave her the chance to fix her self. I wasn’t given the chance to explain myself to them because they didn’t have the decency to tell me what the issue was.
I feel like my rights as an athlete were violated this weekend because this rule does NOT exist in writing. I should not have to get a waiver signed and approved by OSAA to allow me to race due to my religious head covering. Hijabs are not specifically prohibited by OSAA rulings.

Any of those fools should have realized an exemption should not be needed in this case. These guys are idiots.
Damn libs, can you go one day without pretending to be outraged
It's a hijab and doesn't interfere with visibility of the team uniform, so the rule is stupid. However, it is clearly stated in the manual.
Taken from here, page 7-8.
https://www.ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Sports/Cross%20Country/CCManual.pdf
"4. Apparel...
c) During inclement weather, Cross Country runners may wear the Navy Watch Style knit
cap. The cap may have no bill, but may have a knit ball on top or a tassel or tail provided
the tassel or tail is no longer than ½ depth or length of the cap.
d) Headbands may be worn provided the headband is manufactured for that purpose. Rolled
up bandannas or other articles are illegal."
Here's where the request comes in based on religion or other reasons to alter the uniform.
"5. Exceptions
A competitor who requires an exception to the uniform rules because of religious restrictions or
otherwise, must submit a request for a variance from the OHSAA via e-mail (
). If the
variance is granted, a written, signed approval of the variance must be presented to the referee
prior to competition."
All they had to do was submit the request and show an official before the meet in question. Smaller meet hosts don't generally give a crap, but once you enter the state series, all bets are off. The coach, school's AD, and the athlete all dropped the ball on this one.
On the other hand, Ohio should update its rules to make religious restrictions unnecessary to submit a formal request, as more and more diversity amongst athletes is inevitable (and a good thing). Until then, read the manual, follow the rules, and she can compete.
serious question. Do the rules state that you have to have an exemption to wear a beanie or balakava or buff?
it just seems like another HS silly uniform rule.
damn this is like a big deal and muslims must be being treated really badly around the country you probably feel like you're responsible that's because you are
The referee or his/her designee shall give a final warning regarding uniform violations
prior to the start of the race as rules require.

First: I live in Ohio as an atheist who is completely appalled by the Christian right or any other right wing segment of a religion. Don't paint us all with this brush.
Second: as someone who views all religions with an equal amount of shock at the non-sense they can believe, I always find it pretty ironic that the political left, especially the SJWs, find that is their mission to make sure that hijabs (and other religious clothing that women wear) are protected.
By doing this they are, on the one hand, protecting an article of clothing that has, for centuries, subjugated women and kept them oppressed in a religious context. With the same breathe they are claiming to be great emancipators...freeing non-Western women from Christian/Western definitions of normative behavior.
Claiming to be freeing someone from oppression by granting them freedom to be oppressed. I guess it's too difficult to ask for some consistency.
