I'm a 17:30 5k hobby jogger who has been running for a couple of years and am currently 29 (152lbs/6"1'). I'm still on low mileage (20-25miles per week the past two months) as I'm building up slowly as my body adjusts.
About half my runs have been easy miles of various lengths and the other half have been fartleks, tempos around (6:00-6:20 pace), kilometer and mile repeats around 5k/10k or LT pace and a hill reps of 30-60s scattered around the place.
My question as in the title is what workouts would help me the most to peak for a middle distance event. I'm racing a 1500m indoor next month and I figure I can get in 4 quality workouts that will really benefit me. Also, I need a time goal I guess. I have run a 4:50 mile on the treadmill (I know this is a lot easier even though it was at 1%) which felt quite controlled and not all out. I also have a FAT PR of 57s for the 400m and 2:16 for the 800m from this time last year (same event). They were run off similar training so I have some speed despite not really doing speed workouts and with both of those being a year ago and were run off just jogging and tempo runs/5k races, I reckon I could PR in those events currently.
I've never done any specific middle distance training and due to having fairly good baseline speed, I want to capitalise on that this year. Can anyone propose 4 sessions to fit in between now and then that would help me peak for that race and also give me an indication of an approx time goal.
Thanks in advance.
