Just started doing squats but am wondering if hip thrusts are actually a better way of adding strength. If you have experience (good or bad) with em, let me know

Unnecessary. There is no need to get that fancy. The squat, leg press, and deadlift are all you will ever need.

Don´t listen to that, hip thrusts are no lady exercice, just don´t let it stand alone, mix it up, always mix it up... and load up on it, go heavy 5sets x 5reps...
