Last year when 18 year-old Selemon Barega ran 12:43.02 in Belgium (with Gebrhiwet and Kejelcha hot on his tail), it looked promising that the record could go down in the next few years. The Diamond League cutting out 5000 and 10,000 is bad, but it could open up the opportunity to stage some record attempts. Let the guys sharpen up with a couple 1500 and 3000 races in DL events, then stage a few races with good chances for agreeable weather conditions, and make it worth it for the top contenders to show up. All the major sponsors should be able to offer enough prize money to make a record enticing.
After the Olympics it would be cool to see such an event at the new Hayward Field track...
I disagree with DL cutting out 5000 and 10000 leads to better record attempts for 5000 and 10000 in special races. One reason Bekele was able to get that fast is that he consistently raced the distance at high levels and shaved off few seconds time after time until he got to 12:37. It was a slow progression over many very hard races.
If people only race the 1500 and 3000, they can't just jump into a 5000 and expect to suddenly hammer down a WR, even in good conditions on a fast track. They are not used anymore to racing this distance, and miss out on the best, most effective training for fast 5000 or 10000 times - other extremely fast 5000 or 10000 races.
Coe literally killed T&F with his decisions, just hope that the next leadership has more sense.
