If LRC didn't have a personal stake in Howard, RoJo would be all "tough luck, she should have run faster at nationals, it's the world championships, you don't go just to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Except he'd probably write "its the world championships."
Nearly a month? It's been 20 days. That's not nearly a month.
Colleen has proved before that she can race exceptionally well in championship races off of minimal running because of injuries. I don't blame her at all for continuing to train and have strong hopes of running at worlds. She hasn't hidden the injury and has been very open open her struggles.
I love that Colleen shared about her injury, and I don't want to dissuade athletes from doing that in the future. Guys, come on. No one knows the nature of the injury, and it sounds like it's been unclear whether it would be okay in time. Stop the witch hunt. Colleen is waaaaaay faster than Marisa anyway.
Is she faster with an injured foot? Will that foot hold up through rounds? If she DNFs then her spot would have been wasted.
If Quigley has only a 30% probability to be in a decent shape, she already has a better chance getting into the final than Howard, with all respect to the latter.
This is a stupid statement for a couple of reasons. As an unsponsored athlete if there is even the slightest chance you may be running at worlds then you shouldn't be on a break. So that's a problem with you and your coach. Secondly the decision should be not be solely in your coaches hands, if it is then you and your coach need to have a heart to heart about if they should be your coach or not moving forward. I feel like the athlete should have some say in decisions like this one. At any level the coach athlete relationship should be not be owner and slave.
Was this definitely a “statement” that was intended to be shared (on the record) or was it a personal correspondence that you just chose to share?
Just curious.
Does QC (or any athlete) get bonus money (shoe sponsor or USATF) for
-making national team?
-starting Olympic or Worlds?
-making final?
-reaching podium?
-winning OG or WC?
Perhaps there are $everal reason$ for an (injuried) athlete to be coy and make the trip to the desert
She has been unable to run since posing the IG story supporting abortion ...
It was kind of shocking to see her take a stand like that. I guess she is supporting something she really believes in.. She is incredibly nice....

I don't understand why she's wasting a spot when there's probably a healthy alternate who could represent the US better
I completely agree with this.
The answer is greed, being extremely selfish and self centered.

I agree with this too, and was thinking the same thing.
I don’t know. We don’t have the full details to know Colleen’s injury. At the end of the day, it’s her spot that she earned to give up. Maybe the 20 days ago she still thought she’d be able to race. It doesn’t seem like Marisa is ready to go at this point anyways.

Bottom line - Marissa Howard is NOT important! Sad that USATF and Jerry treat her like this.

Yeah. Although I was "5th", on the other side of the ledger (i) we don't have real information about the timeline of everything, and (ii) although I continue to think the equities are on the side of someone for whom it is likely their only chance to compete at something like Worlds and would be an unforgettable experience the rest of their life, on the other hand, Ms. Howard has a paying non-running job, whereas 100% of Ms. Quigley's career is running or running-related, so maybe that balances the equities a bit as far as being hesitant to give up the chance of competing at Worlds if there was a chance she might be able to run.
If I was in Howard's place, I might be inclined to play up how "unprepared" I was, to relieve any pressure on the resulting performance. She is probably in excellent shape, should certainly not be on the couch eating tubs of Ben and Jerry's.

Interesting. I definitely won’t be pulling out of Colleen.
Surprised it took until the 3rd page for the 15 year old Beavis response.
She's also got a torn hip labrum and a bum foot, this does not bode well for a long term career maybe in the mermaid division she can win mermaid medals.

Marisa Howard - the woman who we helped get to Pan Ams (where she won silver) - was the 5th placer at USAs. She was entered as an alternate. She's a school nurse so hopefully she can get off.
The steeple starts on Friday. They'd have to be leaving tomorrow at the latest.
I kind of feel like Colleen needs to make this decision more than 3 days before the start of the competition. Marisa Howard may never get the chance to run another Worlds.
You should write a full article on this subject. It is important.
Robert,
This is a story that needs to seen on a higher scale, let’s get this on the home page with a full article! If Colleen can’t run she needs to pull out now
