It's the only thing left in track and field where the women don't do the same discipline as the men (not including different weights of shots, height of hurdles, steeple, etc.) Anyone know if their are plans to change it.

I agree, though I'm sure I won't be the first to point out that the women actually do a HEPtathlon outdoors.

There have already been several womens' decathlons contested. Just not at the same level as the heptathlon.
They have been considering making the decathlon an official IAAF womens' event for many years now, particularly after the recent surge in womens' pole vault; however, don't expect the change to happen in the very near future.
