I need something light, lower profile, and meant for lots of pavement....something not quite completely minimal, but more of a hybrid meant for a guy used to high and heavy Asics. Anything good under $80?

New Balance 900. Not a complete racing flat, but a light, low heeled shoe that fits like a flat but remains a trainer. A great shoe.
Yeah, I agree NB900 is good.
But if you're acustommed to Asics I'd recommend Asics DS Trainer, it's a little more forgiving and more cushioned without extra weight.
This is the type of shoe I train in, and at 100+ miles a week. I was running in the DS TRainer until I got the Puma Heras. I am on my third pair and I love them.
The NB900 is easily the worst road shoe on the market. New Balance has dropped it from their line. If you want to save your knees, avoid it like the plague.
If you are used to the 2090/2100 or Kayano, why not try the DS Trainer? This would be a logical move.
New Balance has not dropped the 900 from their line. It's update, the 901 will soon be released. For those liking shoes like the 900, Zoom Elite and DS Trainer etc, check out the Avi-Lite from Avia- great shoe!

The 901 is a significantly altered version of the 900.
