Serious question for Coevett and the other specialists for the subject:
We all know that beeing world class over 1500m and 5000m is very suspicious for north and east Africans (in contrast to the allowed 800m/1500m combo, which the Brits used to like). But we also know that this can't be true for the white European Jakob Ingebrigtsen. I know it must sound little bit silly, but I'm not completely sure why this holds true?
I've only stated that I found the sudden near universal switch from 800/1500 to 1500/5000 coinciding exactly with the start of the EPO era, and Africans leading the demand for the timetable to be switched, is suspicious.
It's no secret that the Ingebrigtsens are high mileage endurance guys. However, despite what many here say, I think Jakob has great potential at 800. People here forget he broke the age 14 800 world record just 4 years ago. He's run the 800m once in the last two seasons, two years ago when he was 16, and ran 1:48 or 1:49. So at 16 he wasn't much slower than El G at his peak over 800m. Quite sure he could get close to 1:44 or 1:45 now, faster if he trained for it.
Guys like Moorcroft and Ovett could run the 1500/5000, but could also run a fast 800, especially so in Ovett's case, although I think personally he would have been a faster 1500/5000 guy. One reason he might not have gone the 1500/5000 route is because the timetable in those days was geared to the 800/1500 double. Of course it all turned out well because Ovett ended up winning 800 gold in Moscow.
