But she is only 30 s from the American record. Would you encourage an 8:30 male steepler (and 3x NCAA Champ) to go pro?
Chepkoech has run 14 seconds faster than the third fastest performer ever. 14 seconds back on the men's side ... is 8:07. How many men have run that?
Makes more sense to go pro now.
Has a degree, earned this spring.
Going back for a final NCAA would have its rewards (maybe an NCAA XC title and 4th steeple) but there are risks with injury with any athlete and say she has an off year, her stock as a pro could go down. And the NCAA cycle is not conducive to the World and Olympic years, especially with the championships being so late in the year in 2019 and 2020.
You can't really compare men's and women's differentials (and if you do please use percents, not seconds), especially in an event like the steeple, which is what, 20 years old on the women's side. If she can stay healthy, AllieO's times in a couple years will probably be ca. 9:20, 15:00, 31:00--and I know this is letsrun where you're considered no good as a female unless it's 9:00, 14:30, and 30:10 (8:00, 13:00, and 27:00 for men)--and those would be competitive times.
And finally, she actually has a decent shot at making the Worlds team this year, whether it's 20 - 30 seconds off the eventual winning time or not.
