I'm so sorry to hear this.
FWIW, I have z-scores in the 1.5-2 range. 6 stress fractures. Was on Forteo for two years and not a single stress fracture during that time. Unfortunately when I came off of Forteo, the stress fractures started again. My Z-scores improved a smidge over those two years, but not by much. It's a great drug, but it sucks that it's only approved for 2 years. (and that you really have to fight insurance to get it covered).
I hope you find some answers - please keep us updated. Never knew how many of us were struggling with this.
Thanks for the post. Can you tell us your story? Did you continue to run through all this? How did you handle taking Forteo? Any side effects? Was it a pain in the a** to travel with it?
my low bone density is probably due to a teenage eating disorder and female athlete triad. I never noticed a single side effect from Forteo, and continue to run and train and compete throughout taking it. Some folks hate injections, but it's a pre-filled cartridge and super easy after the first time or two. Occasionally my ass would get sore if I didn't rotate the injection side (you either do hip/glute or stomach).
Actually wasn't so bad to travel with. You have to carry it on, and you may get stopped by security, but I always pulled it out of my bag preemptively. The only thing that would trigger it is if the ice packs you travel with start to melt and then those are "liquid." I actually stopped traveling with the travel bag they gave me and bought an insulin cooler bag on amazon and it was much easier/more compact. I also kept a small fridge thermometer in the bag to make sure it wasn't getting too hot. They say you can leave it out at room temp for up to 30 hours for one pen, and I'm guessing that it's actually a lot more than that (the FDA just makes them be careful - kinda like expiration dates). I did a LOT of cross-country and international travel with it and never had a problem with it getting too hot (including 16-24 hour travel days).
Another way to travel with it is get a Yeti mug and then fill it with ice once you get through security. Or ask on the airplane for ice as well. With a little creativity, it's pretty easy.
