Briefly, we bought 2 weeks of new construction about eight years ago. Initial purchase price was $160,000 a week. It’s a 3 bedroom, ocean front, floating weeks. Because of the value in our unit, I can trade these 2 weeks for 4 to 6 weeks just about anywhere else in the world. It was a long, long, slog getting the thing paid off, but I knew I’d enjoy vacation more if I wasn’t worrying about a mortgage. I know some of you are going to be saying I should have bought the weeks on the secondary market, or I should just rent a place when I need it. That might be true for some resorts, but 1) This one has increased in value and 2) The ownership benefits are weaker for those purchased on the open market. I expect to enjoy this purchase for another 30 years and then my children can fight over who gets to use it each year.
