She worked at Gu and probably had more connections and ease of getting equipment/training than most, so this might not be as special as you think at first.
A manager at 33? That's young.

She had all the resources available to her to do this. Most Americans don't. WaPo has some good comments.
She's probably a rich 1%er. Divorced and chasing glory in the mountains.
You are missing the point entirely. I am not saying that Viesturs is safer if he climbs without O2. I am saying that someone who is using O2 but can climb without it if need be has a much larger margin of safety than someone who is paying a bunch of money to go up but doesn’t really have the underlying abilities. Sure they can make it up, but their probability is much lower.
Right on Jamin. The best thing to do is not sign up for these things. I put my phone on DND. No reason to get triggered, woke, inspired, influenced, etc. The biggest con of last few years is the Influencers. What a bunch of crocks.
I often complain about all the picture-takers and Instagramers out there but I bet people have been doing stupid stuff before they could record it. I'm only 32 so don't have a ton of perspective but I remember doing silly and stupid things when I was young even without the reward of likes.
Maybe it's worse now. I just went to Yosemite on memorial day and it didn't bother me that much so I'm getting better at ignoring it.

I'd prefer to go to Georgia and go up the Caucasus peaks or the Julian Alps in Slovenia or the Oral mountains in Russia
Most are probably breathing out of the tank, not into it.
Also firewood is scarce on the Mountain.
Well done.
I hate my instagram account, it has made me less happy.
On the positive side, Nijel Amos followed me and I had him blocked.

+1 this is carp -
https://www.instagram.com/subway/?hl=enWhat it says is that climbing Mt Everest is meaningless. There are much greater achievements that achievement purists will now turn to, better things like swimming around Antarctica. Anyone done that yet? Hell, nobody's even FOR REAL done the hike across Antarctica, the recent attempt was bogus, not all the way across. First to swim all the way around and not be eaten by a seal is king.

You are either a complete idiot or trolling.

What do you think of this woman, jamin?
Altitude adjusted in a tent, then went over and knocked it off in a less than two weeks.

Strangely they didn’t mention the cost of this. Alpenglow charges $85k for Everest and won’t accept you unless you have done an 8000m like Cho Oyu, which costs $40k. They won’t let you on that unless you have done a 7000m, like Aconcagua...

A couple decades ago it would be considered a unique thing to run a marathon or sky dive. Now the average person has probably done both of those things.
Jesus, you're dumb.

Someone can't abandon O2 that high on the mountain if they have been using it the entire time, though. Viesturs and other professional mountaineers are safer because they are professionals, and that includes a higher level of fitness. But if Viesturs is climbing with O2, he can't suddenly abandon it above 8k.
Chaz Reinhold, who is in the hall of fame, sums up the problem succinctly:

"Ahhh! I'm hang-gliding, honey; take a good picture, I'm dead." What a freak!
I was at the top of Mt. Washington Labor Day weekend last year. There were at least 200 people waiting in line to take a picture with the summit sign. Blew my mind.
