Find the quickest way to Rt.84N or East. Head towards Boston. the last town in CT is Union. There are two Union exits, you want the second one. I think it is exit 74. (The first exit will say Asford, Stafford Springs, Union.)
As you come off the exit, you want to go left towards Holland , Mass. Head over Rt. 84 and take a right. That will follow around and eventually cut the Hamilton res. in half. There's a small market on your right if you want water or gatorade.
Continue on about a mile or so, and the road will split with a right heading uphill. Go right there. At the top of the hill you will come to a stop sign where the school is on your right, the old library straight ahead.
Go straight there. I think you're heading towards Brimfield.
Your next left is the road you want. It's only about 400-600m from the school. As you turn into the road, check out the sandhill on your left!! Drive another 600m down the street and the Old Holland Pond state park is there. It has been taken back over by teh Army Corp of engineers and is also a "best kept secret". You can park at the gate on weekdays or drive in on weekends. Warm-up in there and out on the surrounding quiet country roads. You'll see that there's a very refreshing swim waiting for you when you're done with the workout.
AS you head over to the hill, be sure to stay away from the sand mining operation.(Inside the gated area). Those hills can collapse and can be dangerous.
The workout hill may have some glass close to the road, but the hill itself is glass free. I wore shoes the last time I did it, but my athletes did without. I have them head straight up. It flattens out at the top and should end with a good hard 40-50m on the flat. As you turn to go down, head down the slight trail just to the left of the big hill. It's fairly gentle and won't kill the knees on the way down.
Back in the day, I got up to 2 sets of 8 on the hill with a n 800m recovery run between sets. I've trained on the dunes in Australia, this is the closest you can get to that experience in CT,MA.
Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy!
I posted this to the site instead of an e mail in case any others wnated to see it. Miles of trails at Lake Mashapaug and Bigelow Hollow State park in Union. We used to get a cheap hotel in the Sturbridge area and train up here for 5-6 days.
