Seriously, why do you care if someone wants to walk a marathon?
At least because due to them I have to wait longer for any after race event, such as a lottery or awarding ceremony.

So it's all about you?

I always see articles about these last place finishers in marathons who come in holding hands and stuff like that.
My first thought is that these are people who are just very unprepared to be in the race they entered. I also think that if I were someone who lived around there, I wouldn't be thrilled about the roads being closed for another 2 hrs. Yet, when I read the comments, they're all sort of the same "They're the REAL winners" "The ran just as far as the winner!!" "They finished, that's what counts!" types of comments.
Ive heard that long ago, before I was born, the standards for your average American recreational runner used to be much higher.
Can anybody who's seen it tell me how, when and why our standards have dropped so low?
We see this kind of post from time to time here, and the answer is that you suck as a runner and want to make yourself feel better that there are others who are slower. You are to a good college runner what these slow marathon runners are to you. You aren't making any money at it, so why the hell do you even bother? You don't know why they run, what their past is. For all you know they were 600 pounds two years ago and through diet and exercise got to where they are today. You are a judgmental f*ck.

Umm....wut
[When did "just finishing" become a big accomplishment?]
For me it was a few years after a diagnosis of muscular dystrophy.
Your goals don't have to be everyone else's.
I have a lot of sympathy for slowers runners.
But if a marathon takes them more than 5,5 hours or a HM more than 2,5 hours, then they’d better run shorter distances.
Besides, running 6 hours non-stop can’t be healthy for a non-fit person. I don’t know if it’s healthy to run for 6 hours for a fit ultra runner, but I’m sure it’s not for 6hr marathoners.

Oh did you go to upstairs medical college too?

Started when your parents told you they loved you.
Who sets the standards? If I run a 50 mile race and come in 2 hours after the winner, I don't feel bad at all. I'm doing it for me not for you.
When they introduced the concept of "finishers medals".
You're welcome!
4:30 is not a fast time at all, but I give her credit for actually running it honestly. That's a 9:40-ish mile. Hobbyjogger, but not as slow as people think. Far slower than LR, of course. Plus it was MCM and that's a tougher course to do your first 'thon on.

+1
Its not just that "finishers" are celebrated now, but they're all "HEROs," that makes me crazy.
You didn't prepare properly for the Boston marathon so you take 5:30 to complete it and the local media celebrate you as a f'n "hero" rather than an idiot.
In 1994 Oprah Winfrey finished the Marine Corps Marathon. Emphasis on finished. She had been telling her millions of female viewers about her plans since 1987. She was applauded endlessly for "finishing". This led to a whole host of celebrities "finishing" a marathon.
So the answer can be pin pointed to an exact time, date, and event in history.
