I always see articles about these last place finishers in marathons who come in holding hands and stuff like that.
My first thought is that these are people who are just very unprepared to be in the race they entered. I also think that if I were someone who lived around there, I wouldn't be thrilled about the roads being closed for another 2 hrs. Yet, when I read the comments, they're all sort of the same "They're the REAL winners" "The ran just as far as the winner!!" "They finished, that's what counts!" types of comments.
Ive heard that long ago, before I was born, the standards for your average American recreational runner used to be much higher.
Can anybody who's seen it tell me how, when and why our standards have dropped so low?
