I am a 30 year old male and am really slow. Here are my PRs (all set within the last 18 months)
Mile: 5:24
5k: 18:48
10k: 39:56
HM : ~1:29
FM: ~3:16
I have been feeling incredibly bad about these times and as a result really wanted to get faster. To do so I was willing to put in more work. That means more miles and more time running. I was hoping the extra work would translate into results but not so much.
I have increased my mpw from 50 to 60 this training cycle. I typically run Tuesday through Friday during the week and then add a long run on Sunday. I’m pretty certain that all my runs are at a sub 9 min/mile pace but I don’t time them.
Prior to this week my last six weeks I have logged 63.5, 67, 50, 64, 70.5 and 71 miles respectively running 5 days per week. If you’re keeping score that averages to a 12 mile run each session.
This week I have only ran 24 miles. Why? I wanted to try another 5k and see what i could do on fresh legs? The result? Barely breaking 20 minutes.
I wish I could say I am lying but sadly I am not. Running is very important to me and I put in a good 8-10 hours per week into my craft. Because I enjoy running? No because I’m obsessed with my times.
I’m a lot slower than a lot of you guys but to be honest that also really frustrates me. To see people running 20 miles per week and breaking 17 5k and 37 10k that really hits me hard. To say I’m envious is an understatement.
I have increased my work load substantially and have gone from 19/40/89 to 20/41/91. I’m so angry right now.
