The superior question, is: which event specialist is ideally suited to evade police chase? I say 400 hurdlers.
Steeplechase/XC specialist, on cops they are often jumping over fences and over grassy backyards.

They will shot you if even you do not pose a threat.
police shoot criminals
i'm glad they do
It doesn't really matter because the police officer will radio for backup and within a minute or two you will be trying to outrun 5 cop cars as well.
i'm calling BS to most of these statements saying the average cop can run a 60s 400.
as a kid we ran from the police a lot. more times than i could count. and they never even stayed close.
we would run ahead, stop, turn around, mock them, then take off again. rinse/repeat.
now this was in the day before they could simply shoot us and was in a quiet, little midwest farm town.
they were fat, slow, donut eaters.
I don't know but I love the title of the thread hahaha the amount of times I've heard "The only time I run is from the police".
And the answer:

I think the initial burst of speed to separate will come in handy more so than the endurance of a true distance runner. A serious 400 hurdler should be able to go hard for half a mile, if need be--more than enough in most situations.
Is this like the cop has come to arrest me and im in split shorts, just finished a quarter of a threshold workout and Im totally revved and the cop is wearing cop clothes? we need some context. I'm nowhere near as fast in a suit and wingtips than I am in my cheaterflys.

The average police officer isn't going to catch most people here.
First, they're not fast enough.
Then you have to think of their uniform, shoes, gun, belt, cuffs they are carrying.
And you have a slight head start.
The main issue would be handling your adrenaline.
You may trip and fall right away.
And you have to have a destination to run to and get far enough away to be out of sight.
Then not show your face in that area again.
And don't be black.
They will shot you if even you do not pose a threat.
This isn't a very flowing poem.

You're telling me you don't wear your cheaterflys to work? I always do so I'm 4% faster and then leave 4% earlier everyday.
Have a friend who was the defending conference 5000/10000 champ and got chased down and caught by police and arrested for under age just a few days before his 21st birthday.....

I'd say a top beer miler. Because if you're running from the cops, you are probably full of booze.
Also, a pole vaulter, if he happens to have his pole and the stars are aligned near a 16 foot fence with a block in front of it and a soft landing on the other side.

Sub 32 for the 1st 200m to get away. then sub 70 for 400m then sub 6 min pace to get away from 90 percent of all cops.

You might be able to outrun the cop but not the radio.
You may want to dodge and climb wrote:
Lasse Viren and Joe Falcon were both Police Officers.
lol but not really
I wouldn't worry about the average police officer....
....How fast is too fast for the fastest police officer to chase you on foot?

wasn't kiprop a police officer. that means the answer in Kenya is faster than 3:26.69 for 1500m
A 1:15 quarter mile and you should be in the clear
Very few, if any, cops could catch anyone posting on this board in a one-on-one chase. We're fitter, they're fatter (and they wear 15 pounds of miscellaneous armor, equipment and weaponry). But ultimately none of us would get away in a real-life situation since they have radios, cars, guns, helicopters, cameras.
