I was talking generically rather than considering the situation in any one country. But the whole issue of who can vote raises all sorts of questions. Maturity, as you stated. Intelligence as others have stated. Military service as I stated. What about the concept of no taxation without representation? Should people who are citizens, but not eligible to vote, be exempt from taxes until they reach voting age? Then there is the concept of life expectancy. A person in their 20's has a lot more future at stake than someone in their 70's. Should their vote count more, after all they are the ones who will have to deal with the national debt, not the 70 year olds. Obviously there is no answer and any attempt to find one will quickly spin off into partisan manipulation. But it is fun to talk about it at the dinner table.
