I'm involved with UX/Product Design at a Fortune 25 company. We are just below the FAANG level (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix). I pull $150K base salary in the midwest, plus I freelance for other companies bringing my grand total to $200K.
I was a "B-" student in high school, and a 3.0 student at a large public university. I scored a 21 on my ACT. I'm terrible on Wonderlic Tests, but tested high on creativity tests as an elementary school student. I'm truly awful at math and have a low attention span. Nothing about me is special in terms of intelligence, in fact, I think I'm kind of stupid.
However....
I'm very good socially and I'm always relaxed and professional in the office. I'm obsessed with doing the best for myself and others. I work on my skills outside the 9 to 5. I bring no drama or attitude to the workplace and you'll be surprised how far that will take you. Keep your opinions to yourself, be grateful, never engage in gossip, under promise and over deliver.
Be the person you want to be on paper. Help people above you in the org chart. Reach out to people you admire and learn what makes them great.
That's how you get ahead.
