Looking at the main replies of the thread I need to confirm that many translations are going in the same way as PR.
At least French translation it is PR !!
Only slow people who picked up running in their twenties, say PB. They were mediocre swimmers in high school where the term is more common.

Hmm...I was a decent track runner in high school and my coach used PB. So, I guess you are incorrect.
I blame myself for indulging in this stupid argument. PB and PR mean the same thing in practice. Personally, I prefer PB because it explains my best effort without implying that I have set a record. I think a record implies that you have run faster than other people who have raced the same distance. With that said, I don't have any problem with people who think in terms of the record measured against your own previous (or future) efforts.
PB is peanut butter
Betting what you consider decent wasn't 4:15 in the mile. Betting if your coach called it a PB, he wasn't a 4 minute miler in college but was probably a hobby jogger.

The word "Personal" in both PB and PR is the key. If you just concentrate on the second word then both fragments are problematic. Best implies you are the best. You are not. Unless your name starts with Mo or Ken. Additionally, best can just mean best on that day - you are the best runner on your team, you bested the field, you ran your best (on this day, even if it's not your fastest time ever).
When you set a PR it is your "Personal" record. Just like an American Record, or a School Record. It's your fastest recorded time for a set distance.
There really no difference between a PB or a PR. It's all about what you grow up with and what sounds better to you.
Pretty sure everyone just says what their high school coach preferred.
I say PR and don't feel like it connotes anything more impressive than if I said PB. And PR rolls off the tongue better (at least the way I speak), so it's less likely to trip people up.
But say what you like. I won't care.
My hs coach only said, "You make me sick with your pathetic talents."
As for PB v. PR what is most important, whichever you choose, is to make the air quotes gesture when you say it. That gesture acknowledges the reality that your best marks are in fact pathetic. No one cares what you call them.
I call it my PBR, as easy rolling off the tongue as the other PBR is rolling onto it
you must be young, all us old guys say PR. PB was stupid back in the day... and for kids who didn't know what running fast was a

So stupid that the world governing body uses "Personal Best" all the time and always has done.

Does that mean Personal Best Jogger?
I say PBR. As in, Personal Best Record.
How can this thread get so many posts? When I ran competitively every one used PR and maybe people now use PB and why should anyone give a crap?
Can we switch to something more intellectually stimulating such as "Ginger vs Mary Ann"?
I can't tell if this is bait (7/10 if it is) or if OP and the people responding to him are total morans.

After commenting about the number of posts on this thread responding to an idiotic PB is better than PR, I suggested a better topic would be the Mary Ann vs Ginger which even hotly debated for over 50 years, but there has not been a response.
All though obviously high maintenance, Ginger was smoking hot and had a body that makes SFH's look boyish. Mary Ann was cute and slightly chubby. With Mary Ann you would have a great cook who would enthusiastically take on all the household chores. Ginger wouldn't even try.
Polls have shown a 3 to 1 preference for Mary Ann.
