After averaging about 60 miles a week previously (hitting 70-75 sometimes but rarely), I've bumped my mileage this spring/summer in the following progression:
73, 89, 51, 95, 87, 100, 80, 100.
No real intended pattern there, just trying to get near/at 100 and hold it there (taking workouts short or off if very fatigued or sore so as to avoid injury, and the 51 mile week was the result of travel constraints). In the process of this mileage bump, I've also been doing at least one (sometimes two or three) very hard 4 or 5 mile tempo runs/week. Despite working hard and doing strides before each tempo, these runs have been always hovering around 5:52 per mile pace, with one exception.
Now, I was thinking that as I did higher mileage, and consistently did these tempo runs, that they would get faster, but they haven't. Why not? Is it just that I haven't been doing high mileage for long enough, and that my legs are still adapting? If so, how long should I expect for results?
