She just earned $656,854.50 for her semi final appearance. She earned $4 million in prize money and $32 million in endorsements in 2020, probably more that the top 25 female T&F athletes put together. Pretty good money for a has-been.

She's not playing for the money but for slam #24 which she ain't ever gonna get.

Definitely an accurate prediction. I don't know if I would have agreed two years ago when you initially posted this but it has proven to be true. Hasn't won a GS since January 2017. No matter how good you are, time eventually takes its toll. You never know when your last championship will be so you've gotta enjoy them while they last. It has been years since I last won a road race overall. At the time I didn't know that would be my last win and I took it for granted. Hope Williams savored her last championship because she will never experience it again.
Rational take here. I, too, wish I was finished & cashing out like that. Her last 2 majors were both semi-finals runs. She played in 2 finals in 2019. I think she still has a shot this year. You can't say she doesn't when she's been top-4 the last 2 times out. Is it likely? Probably not. Without playing as much as she usually does, her seeding takes a hit and she has to play some tougher matches to make it happen. That's a calculated risk to play less at this stage in her career -- just look at this most recent run. Had to beat the #2 in the quarters, the #7 in the 4th round, an up & comer in the 3rd round, etc., before running into Osaka.
LRC is always behind the curve and always so negative. We should be talking about how impressive Serena has been her whole career and how she knocked off some good players to get to the semis at age 39. Instead, a bunch of ya'll take some weird joy in letting us know that she's done. Meanwhile, Serena is continuing to cash out.
She might never win another Grand Slam again, but she is certainly winning at getting a rise out of those who would seek to deny her greatness. If you're a grown man hating on the greatest athlete of all time because she is merely the greatest by a modest margin instead of blowing everyone clear out of the water, thewn Serena has just won again (courtesy of you)!
If Osaka hadn't saved those two match points against Muguruza, it might have been a Williams vs Brady finals.
Osaka is the best female player in the world in 2021. Brady will have her hands full.
Here's something else:
Margaret Court, who won 24 slam singles, also won a total of 64 slam titles when you add her doubles and mixed doubles titles.
Serena is still a phenomenal player, and she'll definitely have chances at Wimbledon.
Don't care for Osaka but she is currently playing unbeatable tennis. Brady's decent but Osaka's gonna beat her like a redheaded stepchild. AndvSerenavstill has excellent chances at another Slam title this year. Even though she's now fat and out of shape she's still good enough to make the Semis and Finals at any Major.
Serena always goes into a grand slam ranked around #10 and then makes the semi or the final. She might as well keep trying. All she needs is a tune up before each slam - that's a total of 8 tournaments a year.

Serena hasn't won a slam in 4 years. She's forty. What's the definition of "finished" around here?

Finished is not being able to make the 3rd round. I guess most players' careers are finished.

I guess that too will happen soon enough for Serena. But when you've dominated the sport like no one else and won 23 slams but have hit the wall and been unable to win another in years that too could qualify. Success is relative. A top player on their way down - as she is - is finished. She's just another player in the draw now, not a contender. Her last press conference shows that's a reality she can't handle.

The old "I am too stupid to understand what is being said here".
It's "racist" to not like Williams? I suppose it's racist to not like Trump, either. Oh, dear - everything is racist. To those who can't think.
Serena can be a little moody/mopey/surly. And she's had some ugly on-court moments. Her press conferences always scream, "I don't want to be here," even when she's trying to be nice.
So yeah, it's ok to not like her, just like some people didn't like Mac.

It's certainly not racist to not like Serena. I know a few people involved with tennis and the media who always spoke negatively of her. Watch a person when they're down to see how they truly are.
Like watching Traitor Donnie after November 7, 2020 ! He LOST.

Finished when you can no longer achieve your goals, like winning #24.

Except that her career is not yet finished so nobody knows if she will win 24 and 25. Given that she consistently gets to the semis even when not entirely focused on tennis to the exclusion of motherhood and her other interests and while not in optimum shape, it seems a bit premature to say that she will not win one again...just like it was premature to say Tiger would not win another major or Brady would not win another or Bekele was finished, but if you hate her that much and wish to root against her, go for it. Just be sure to come back and check this thread if/when she wins #s 24 and 25 instead of hiding and sulking.

Tennis isn't golf. You have to be able to run - and fast. She's 40. The players who can beat her now - like Osaka - are in their 20's. They can expect to keep getting better. The odds are she won't. It is going to get harder and harder for her to go deep in the tournaments.
These big losses will also take a mental toll. She used to be a clutch player. No longer. The pressure gets to her. You can see the extremes of her emotions on court.
The game is also changing. When she and Venus came on the tour, they were in another league of power. But now a lot of players can hit as hard - Osaka, Brady, Muguruza - if not harder, and more consistently, and can cover the court better than she does. She no longer has the advantage of bigger weapons than her best opponents, and is a step or two slower and doesn't defend as well.
But all this is to expected of a player of her vintage. 20+ years on the tour is a long time. The game is moving on. She's lasted longer than many other champions but their fate, sooner or later, is usually the same.
