"New York City Serenade" is a better choice from Springsteen.

Those songs are all old. Just like running training techniques today are superior to those from the past, music today is superior.
Therefore, empire state of mind by Jay-Z is the best song mentioned so far in this thread.
If you look at how they trained back in the 60s and 70s and compare it to how today elites train. No real difference. Improvements in timed is due to psychological improvements, improvements in drugs, improvements in technology and being turned into a professional sport.
Manhattan. Rodgers and Hart.
NY State of Mind. Billy Joel.
The Demics: "I want to go to New York City"
Nas - New York State of Mind
Visions of Johanna is a bogus choice, because it’s not overtly about New York, if it’s about New York whatsoever. If you have to go with Dylan, ”Talkin’ New York” or “Spanish Harlem Incident” are lesser songs but better choices. “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” is very urban and ends with “I’m going back to New York City...”, “Talking World War III Blues” is about walking around NYC after nuclear fallout, “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” is about Bob discovering America and has that line about the “Bowery slums,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues” had some radio suck-cess and is as lyrically urban as it gets...anything but Visions of Johanna, man. That song is more about smoking pot and burning incense with a girl who’s alright, she’s just near than about a city. I wouldn’t pick a Dylan song though, I’d pick:
N.Y. State of Mind by N.A.S.
Something written by Paul Simon.
I’ll Take You New York by Tom Waits...hehe.
Crosstown Traffic
Waiting For My Man...Lou Reed
Visions of Johanna...The Man
She's So Tough...Mink DeVille

Why is Visions of Johanna about New York City? Sure Dylan was the “quintessential New York hipster” from ‘63-‘66, but besides maybe a mention of a ‘D’ train, which runs in many cities, I can’t for the life of me figure why Visions of Johanna is “about New York City.” Then there’s that mention of Mona Lisa inside the museums...seems rather Parisian to me.

Without a doubt, Frank's New York is the best, because I did it, my way!

Nas, new york state of mind
Autumn in New York, why does it seem so inviting?
Autumn in New York, it spells the thrill of first-nighting.
Glittering crowds and shimmering clouds in canyons of steel;
they're making me feel: I'm home.
It's autumn in New York that brings the promise of new love.
Autumn in New York is often mingled with pain.
Dreamers with empty hands may sigh for exotic lands;
It's autumn in New York;
It's good to live it again
