Whos he? A golfer?

I wouldn't call Manzano a journeyman, but he did have a similar pattern of not performing great during the "regular season" and then raising his game in championship races.
Centro
Steps up big on the biggest stages, but mediocre in fast DL types of races.
Meb and Manzano work for me. Some huge successes but nobody's real first choice to succeed in any given race.

Meb was the first one that came to mind. Also, Courtney Frerichs could be a candidate on the women's side after the clutch silver and now American record, even though Emma Coburn gets all the attention.

Running is so quantitative versus a more qualitative football that it’s tougher.
If Nick Foles is the underdog that no one expected to win? Then Drew Windle and Leo Manzano come to mind. Neither won on the world stage, but they were both unlikely heroes in races no one thought they make in the finals.
Who is Nick Foles?

Another vote for Manzano. No one saw that silver coming in 2012.
Oh, I was hoping this would have had the name of a runner who had a foot long. #bdn #footlongfoles
Viren. Better than a journeyman but he outperformed on the biggest stage
