I ended up having a tough go of it yesterday. Conditions weren't great, it was warm and humid with a persistent headwind from miles 1-6 and again in mile 13. I got out with a couple of other guys shooting for 1:10, and the pacing was pretty good early on. We reached mile 3 in about 16:04. Unfortunately I lead for this whole segment and the wind was starting to take its toll. I hit the brakes allowing someone else to lead, and ultimately I got what I asked for but it came at a price...we went from 5:20s to high 5:30s and low 5:40s. By now the leaders were long gone (about 1:06-1:07 for the first few) and with no one close behind I chose to stick with the group and try to speed up when we turned around with the wind. A 5:20ish mile at the turn around burned off the pack, but I was now in no man's land and it was really starting to get warm. With any chance of a decent time out the window and no one to race, I got a little weak between the ears and settled into about 5:45 pace and coasted it in from mile 9 to a 1:13 and change.
I'm a little bummed, but still confident that I am physically capable of running much faster on a better day. There's still time for a few good LRs left in the cycle and I'll get come more speed under me in the next 4 weeks. This was a bump in the road, but I feel fitter now than when I ran 2:31 last cycle, so I'm planning on still giving it a shot.
